Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

It's one of Don's lyta style tanks. It is the whole reason I went alloy with the whole bike.

Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

Don't know, I haven't filled it yet. It's still a work in progress. Don could give that info. I still need to do some cutting and welding on it. Adding a fuel sending unit, different rear mount and a notch up front to clear my oil in frame filler neck.

Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

They say the ROADTER tank under the fibreglass cover on the JPS Cafe Racer thingo is just like it but a larger . So they say . Dont think anyone would complain . :? :?:

Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

Hi Gang,
Figured I better add my .02 here.

We're in the process of working out the tooling to press out the tanks but it's a slow process; not to mention the expense.

The good news is that the dies are here in the US and we're trying to determine if we can make them work on the press they have. Not everyone can do a deep draw of large parts, they have a 250 ton press which will do the job.

We are aiming at an initial run of 250 tanks to make it worthwhile which seems doable.

The tanks will have the neck for an OEM cap but I'm interested in seeing if there's an interest in a flush cap too; maybe on the next batch. I'm not a big fan of the OEM style cap for various reasons but I understand the need for a stock looking piece.

These days I don't seem to have the time for the forums etc but I will make it a point to keep up with this thread.

Many thanks again to our loyal customers, and we've also got some more hard to get parts in the pipeline but it's all about tooling costs, fees and other crapola that's a pain in the butt to deal with.

Huge cutaway in the rear of that tank, it looks larger than the Egli cutaway @ 4.5" width. Its been awhile since Ive had the Commando tank off, dont remember the cutaway being that large? I guess the widened out area is to fit around the small tubes that run back for the seat support.

My Egli tank is 4 us gallons, 18 litres, this tank looks like it would be maybe 15 litres or so?

Thanks for the update. I have one request/suggestion. There is always a lot of confusion over parts. I would find it a wonderful gesture to the Norton community if your new tanks were stamped somewhere inconspicuous so that people would know what they were getting. I realize that the used parts market and the used bike market are not necessarily the concern of parts providers, however, I think that a new or newer quality tank would become a sought after thing. Anything that identified it as not a rusted out original or a poorly made substitute would I think ultimately help your marque and be an aid to the community.

I think that is a great idea Russ. Maybe a mfg. date stamp or a serial number. In forty years when the next couple generations are tearing them down, they will have a good idea of what they have based on a date and the initials of the company.

I would whole heartedly agree. You make a AAA class tank with your brand, whatever the cost -hopefully within reach- and you may get Andover Norton interested.
Cuz from what I've read between the lines. The folks over there aren't ecstatic either with the tanks they've been able to source.

Re: Commando Specialties is considering making Roadster Tank

Bridge too far to wonder about a Interstate tank?

My 73 has a good steel interstate tank, but the 74 has a fiberglas tank with about 4 gal. i would sure love to find an affordable steel or aluminum 4 gal tank. i like the stock norton filler, so that would still be preferred.

"850commando" I have this one I was keeping for a future project but may consider letting it go.
Its probably not exact replica but pretty close, Tank and side covers. I had them frame mounted but
never used.Tank is lined with Caswells ethanol resistant liner, NOT because it leaks but a thick coating
of Caswells actually strengthens the tank, cuts down on the humming noise when tank is low on gas
and it seals up and contains any foreign matter from construction. I wont be offering any more tanks and
the couple I have left will be keeping for my own future projects. One of the problems shipping tanks
and seats etc is shipping cost, Even though the tank doesnt weigh much, the couriers have their own
calculations called "dimensional weight" which means items like this cost a lot to ship because they are
big in size. A shame becoz I have a few different style seat bases which would cost a lot to ship but
probably not worth it from the buyers point of view.
Anyway US$1000 for the above + shipping.
Don
