New source for steel Commando Roadster tanks

Maybe a steel Fastback tank is in the (future) works.

I checked out the tank today, and it looked good enough that I bought one for my recent MK III project. The top appears to be made from two stamped halves welded down the center, and the bottom is a one piece stamping. Way better looking than the Indian hand hammered replicas.

Looks GREAT! Do a 2 PSI air and soapy water test before painting, just for safety.

What ever happened to Andover on this? A while ago they seemed ready to be moving toward
offering a roadster tank.
This tank looks good except perhaps for the front seam.

That tank looks great! Much better than the POS Indian tank I bought (now a shelf piece, not good enough for the bike).

Due to the fact they are obsolete this one looks great!!!!
Pressure test and clean up the seems and ready for paint
Thanks fore the pics.

According to the shop I where I bought it, these new EMGO tanks don't leak, having been tested at the manufacturer. This shop has had previous experience with Indian tanks, and was very negative about them, but said the EMGO tanks from Taiwan were much higher quality. But I'll test it anyhow before I paint it. Now I'm just having trouble deciding the paint scheme! So many possibilities. Stock solid colors, metallic colors, metalflake, JPN colors, flames, gold leaf logo? The only one I'm not considering is chrome. I did an Interstate I owned in black with oversize gold leaf logos and stripes outlined in red years ago, and it looked pretty cool, but I don't think I want to repeat.

We actually started the project but then I read on this forum how cheap the Indian efforts were. No way could we get anywhere near that price with a tank Made in England (Birmingham, in fact), and I could not see us selling many at several times the price for the Indian tanks. Outlay in tooling was to be well into 5 figures and the end product was likely to be sitting on our shelves until my retirement...

We next got ourselves a sample from the Indian source that was pointed out on this forum as decent. The threads were no good, the tank stud positions were wrong, and the tank was rusty inside and had a small leak at the front. We weren't overly impressed- neither were we by the seller's reaction to the report of the leak.
But, realistically, these defects could have been rectified with a bit of effort and we felt the market was probably not prepared to pay far more for a decent tank so stopped the project.

Hey,

Got my first tank made by Emgo as well. Took it to my painter and even though it will need some work on the top center seam and a bit on the nose, this tank is far and above any previous after market we have seen. Even better than some original tanks we have pulled off core machines

I feel good enough about it that I will be offering them up for sale as well. The price will be the same as from the other US dealers. $ 475.00

This was way overdue and I am glad someone finally stepped up to manufacture these since anyone with a glass tank will eventually have to go to a replacement

I will be obtaining a tank to have a look at, although plenty of well qualified people have already given the product a very good rap, so it looks very positive.
As always, the price in AUD is my focus. The current price point looks to be USD$475.00, plus approx USD$100.00 shipping, which actually comes close to AUD$650.00 currently(assuming it was purchased by itself, and there were no additional costs). All going well, I will be around AUD$500.00 -AUD$550.00 range delivered (mainland Aust).

Matt,

Great to hear you are going to be selling the Emgo tank. I assume you can also have it painted in any color that the customer chooses?

Thanks,

Chris McCarthy

Chris,

Not sure I will be offering it painted at this time. Since we don't do any paint work in house, I would have to do it through my painter. He is normally 6-8 months out on work so that would be a problem.

I actually came very close to doing my 850 in that scheme - as kid I regularly had my face pressed against the glass at T&D Motorcycles in Leyland gawping at the one on display which never sold, and I suspect the guy still has it.

But then I saw metalflake, and I got my Hendrix tapes out... man.

Far out, etc.

You may actually be right though - it's a killer scheme!

+1
Just stunning that JPN paint job!
Thanks for posting the pics Ken!

I just found out that the steel roadster tanks have landed in the UK - I hope mine will arrive this coming week.

I'm in the process of prepping an Interstate tank which is now down to the bare metal, and the welding isn't exactly pretty on that one, so it'll be interesting to compare.

I'm thinking a Golden Bronze job for the Combat... 8)

That's interesting Andy could you update us please when you get your tank? I want to convert my Interstate to Roadster in the future, Jerry's JPN MK3 has inspired me!

I will be going to the Classic Bike Show in Stafford next weekend maybe the supplier will be at the show?

There's never been a better time to do the conversion - Andover have side panels available, so getting the tinware isn't a problem any more.
I'd expect quite a few vendors will be selling them at Stafford, and I'm guessing the price will be in the region of £280.

Cheers Andy I got your PM.
I won't be doing the conversion any time soon, but thank you for the kind offer of parts, I've got my rebuild to do and a thousand other life type things to do first!

I will hunt down the tanks at Stafford, £280 sounds about right. There was a guy there last year selling refurbished and resprayed tanks (and cables and looms and stuff), he had a genuine Roadster tank and was selling it for I think £420. He cuts out the bottom, beats out any dents and re-welds it all up, so that reflects in the price.

Hi All,

Just got off the phone with Randy Baxter, Baxter Cycles. They are now supplying new steel gas tanks for the Commando Roadster. They are being made in Taiwan, by Emgo. Randy says he really likes them and are much better quality than the tanks coming out of India. Here is a link:

http://www.baxtercycle.com/catalog_product_detail.asp?cat=5230-101809&product=1686041

I have no plans to purchase one at this time, but would like to hear from anyone who is able to see one in person.

Chris

Does anyone know if Walridge plans on carrying these EMGO tanks?

Thanks

Looking forward to getting mine now. Think iam set on metal flake cherry red with gold lettering and pin striping.

General question, norton logo transfers or a better means.... And where would you buy them. I heard something about specific types to allow clear coat over top....

Any advice welcomed

Ben

Hiya Ben,
I had cause to go up to FD motorcycles for something else, AND they do a lot of commando painting . I was impressed with what they did, at the time I thought it was a reasonable price (sorry don't remember now).
They used stencils to spray the logo.
Check out their website.
