For no reason other than to see 'what's what' I took this photo of my just-started rebuild last night - '74 850 MkIIa, gearbox set in the middle of the adjusters, brass tube inserted into cable aperture.
I'm pretty confident this is the original gearbox cover as I don't believe the box had been touched before I got hold of it.

As with most folks, I hate show-stoppers too!

Back to the rebuild... :wink:

Does everyone use that gearbox inspection gasket? I see one above, and noticed grandpaul had one in one of his photos.... I don't really see the point of them as they are not sealing anything or preventing a leak?

But the gasket will prevent water getting IN.

It's a throwback from the days when we were trying to prove we didn't use Cornflake packets for gaskets :wink:

Seriously, water ingress is an issue for these gearboxes, but I suspect its more to do with condensation than anything else.
Long rides on hot days should sort it out - I'm hoping :mrgreen:

Andy, It looks like your cover would work fine with the clutch hose. I have a 69 engine and trans in the cradle on my bench that I use for testing. I went to my storeroom and brought out a box of trans covers to check for clearance problems and found one that caused a problem. It was marked as coming from a 66 N15 and the cable hole was pretty much centered on the iso tube. I have no doubt that if Norton had a few of these left when they were building Commandos they would get used. Live and learn. Jim

That must be where the tradition of painting the gaskets with aluminum paint came from.

Remove your gearbox cap and take a 10 minute ride around town with nice trousers and your best Florshiem shes on, then report back...

Wasn't the old style gearbox cover threaded ?

And what is a Cornflake packet gasket?

The N15 cover was not threaded. Atlas covers were threaded but a drill fixes that.
A Cornflake packet is what you got after you ate all the Cornflakes.

I wonder how many variations of covers there were? I have one on my 750 that does not have the gear indicator scale. I don't know if it came like that or if someone milled it off for some unknown reason. Works just fine though.

Now I have to go out and look at the covers on my bikes. I'm curious to see where the cables point!
