clutch problems, what could cause this?

Has this gearbox been operating OK before? If not if would be good to measure the layshaft and mainshaft run-out. Any bow greater than .010" is going to cause binding. The higher the deviation the worse the binding. You'll need V blocks or access to a lathe to set up the dial gauge and rotate the shafts with measurement at both ends and the centre.
