Hi Voodooo , Is this the same gear box swarf guy that was asking about drain plugs for his TVS 961 on this site ?

I've seen plenty of new motorcycles for first service including Harleys which are sort of known for clunky transmissions and I've never seen that much of anything in any gearbox or engine. Maybe some clutch material residue but chunks of metal?

You have to feel for John, seems like he got ‘that bike’! Shouldn’t happen, but can of course as Simon from FB points out.

Took me about 20 secs to find a similar story to John’s from the mighty Triumph - there are plenty more. My guess is you’ll find them on most makers enthusiast sites, less Honda maybe. Complex machine meets uniquely flawed human in manufacture, assembly, configuration, quality check….etc etc.

John swapped back to Triumph and bought a really nice Thruxton RS, hope he enjoys it; pity though, as we won’t get to find out what was actually causing his specific idle issues.

The other reports seem pretty impressive though - let’s hope it stays that way. Once these guys get some serious mileage up and we get medium/long term tests appear then we can pass an informed judgement on how well (or otherwise) Norton Birmingham has done with the 961.

They could do with releasing a few tasty snippets about future models right about now! You UK lads can ask them directly of course, with the NEC just around the corner.

And yet TVS Norton said “that’s normal”.
You forgot that part.

It’s in no way normal.
Strike 1 against TVS Norton for handling this the way they chose.

How does talking about other brands make this ok? We all know it happens. The point being is TVS Norton failed this long waiting customer and he went to another brand. So instead you smear him by showing him that triumph has issues too. That’s classic.

Yet when we talk about how bad a 961 can be, you get all defensive about it. That’s odd to me.

Haven’t been to the NEC since last I lived in the UK, many years ago. I think we might have put a few questions together last year for those attending? Might be worth doing again - let’s face it they have’nt been too forthcoming with info on future models in the past. ‘Gun shy’ maybe, for over sharing and missing deadlines.

Enough people asking some probing questions and we might see some fresh info appearing. That’s assuming there are no new announcements planned. Ya neva know!

Asking questions of pre prepared staff on the stand at a show is going to yield EXACTLY what they’ve been pre prepared to tell us!

They will tell us about new models when they’re ready.

Yes I believe they probably are ‘gun shy‘. It’s a difficult balance for sure, they have to tell us enough to satisfy our interest, but they have to prevent repeating recent history as they have been very poor at executing on stated deliverables.

Our American friend here has some very particular requirements for a 961 Interstate. Gotta admire his optimism. Fair enough say I!

Seems reasonable enough.
A man can dream, can't he?
Although, I think the sun is setting on 961, it could be done to one of the new twins.
Norton will need to diversify their offerings, something like this Interstate would satisfy a niche.
