961 is back !

I couldn’t imagine trading in a motorcycle of a proven brand, for a new start up brand that’s not even proven.
Will they take a TVS scooter in on trade and provide the same £750 trade in value?

Irrespective of the reasons why… that’s a big chunk of cash saving for anyone actually thinking about buying one.

Although… that doesn’t appear to be anyone on here…!

I did actually think about one. But the deficiencies with mine, and with what I’ve read with others, mean my confidence level is very low. Seems to me that substantial engineering changes were required, and sadly, as discussed elsewhere, Norton have done nothing to provide confidence that such changes have been made.

So it’s a case of ‘once bitten, twice shy’ for me.
As you know Nigel, and just to recap, i also owned a Donington 961 ( for 8 years)... sold it 3 years ago now and still miss it. I've watched every video and read every review on the TVS 961, some very favourable.. and they almost had me puttin a deposit down. SO, i went to view the new bikes at my nearest dealer (oakmere, cheshire) and they let me take one out for a ride. I know all bikes are different, but this bike seriously impressed me... fuelling, throttle response, clutch feel, tickover... all were absolutely perfect and it helped that the suspension was set up perfectly, as the bike handled brilliantly round the country lanes and was also superb in the 30's, both comfort and engine wise. The bike vibrated but only in the way we like, and the whole package put a big grin on my face... All the negative points i had with my 961 seemed to have been ironed out... i loved it ! we'll see.....

Funny isn't it. None of us as far as I know have a TVS Commando yet we are offended by some of his nieve comments about them. Probably because they are a near identical bike to the 2018 model or was the mk2 2016 onwards (after the fixes from Mr Motavated). The engine is a bit harsh and worryingly noisy at times but like Al says, great ride outs on country roads and you fall in love with them.

I agree, but what is actually funny is that NONE of us members have a new one!! I'm in the USA so that's my excuse. But all the UK people and not one person has one or even knows a person who knows a person!

And then you need to wonder no more about that discount...

But then wouldn't that go to one of their "partners"? Makes no sense that a manufacturer would take it

Hello Al , What is the 30’s ?

That’s great feedback Al. Good time to buy with this discount mate…!

I'm yet to hear of a euro4 961 owner road testing a re-release....that, imo, is the only fair comparison from a riders perspective.
Owning a Donington 961 for 8yrs and selling it 3yrs ago, means the comparison is being made against a very early bike....which would be night and day against a late Donington bike.

Sorry - are you looking at me?

yes Stu, mine was a 2012 bike, but really, apart from a slight tickover problem when gearing down to a stop,( i had to gently blip the throttle till it settled ) it ran great. It had the usual rattly engine and clatter on start up..and sounded like it was gonna blow up at any time, but it never did. The TVS bike clattered on start up but was much quieter afterwards... although had a different ''whirring'' sound when revved. The exhaust note seemed deeper and not as raspy/sharp compared to mine...but mine had a decat along with the short open pipes and Norton reckoned they 'remapped' it to suit.... Instead of dealing with Norton direct, why don't you just turn up at a dealer and have a go on one... surely a dealer can't refuse you ?

Don’t think many of us members, that have sorted our Donington Nortons out and are just riding and enjoying, would be chopping them in for a new one - with a sizeable bill to own an almost identical machine. Don’t think we are the most likely group to buy. Try FB - quite a few new ones over there.

961AL I was actually thinking of at the time, sorry. I cant remember, do you have a euro4, Clive?
Late 2017 - Still got some issues and reaching the point where the trade in deal could be of interest??? Or do you fancy a challenge Stu? Just looking at dates but our glorious July weather looks wet until around 2025. Once a day looks half promising I will make the long 5 mile trek and give one a try.
