the cable end is bigger than the slot on the throttle tube mate wondering which is correct

Without knowing the cable nipple size or seeing photos of the parts it's almost impossible to say.

Tom,

Throttle cable: I buy mines from Venhill or one of the other usual suspects, they always fit.
Front brake cable: I make up the cables myself therefore the brake light switch is positioned near the lower bridge of the steering head, so no problems to use the clip on the mudguard.

OK, it's this one: U01-4-100 I use.

We haven't spoken before - so... G'day
If you're in for the long haul you could do far worse than to buy one of the Venhills toolbox of cable parts. Has everything you need other than Commando front brake cable switch (strongly recommended)
I have found this kit great as you can ensure your cables are the correct length and the ends match your application.
Two points of caution for high pull tension (brake & clutch):
* Use high tin content solder, not electrical (high lead)
* Unless you already know, research how to "birds nest" cables onto nipples - may save your life!
All the best
Rob

Cheers mate Ill have a look at that, need to get out on it soon haha

Just got a 1968 Villiers Commando in green one of the first 60 bikes going of the frame numbers totally original to pics to follow

Not a widowmaker frame, I hope? Many were replaced with the strengthened frames, but not all.

Hey everyone so a few years rolled on been a rough 3 years.

Hit 29 now and just been made redundant after our print business went under joys. Managed to hang on to the two Norton's as I said I would never ever sell them :D just such a huge part of me.

It's so important that these bikes are preserved for generations to come having said that it's important to keep them ridden and seen.

Owning a 961 Commando is on hold for now.

Excited for the future though at 29 it's time to chase a dream to do something motorcycle related career wise just gotta sus it out! I guess that's what sums a Norton up for me the pursuit of dreams.

Seeing the pictures are ended up going years ago cheers photobucket!!

here's a few for those catching up

Bought my 650ss from the original owner :) promised never to sell her ever an I'm so honoured to to own one my dads bro raced a 650ss and a N-V 1968 Commando so still have to pinch myself that I own one of each model.

Initially the 650SS had a single 389 Monobloc Carb on it which was ok but I fancied fitting some good ol' twin carbs roll on nightmares trying to get the studs + the slim manifolds to fit the new Premier Amal Carbs I got eventually settled on the original wider manifolds and studs thankfully John the previous owner had kept them in a tobacco tin.

Next issue was cables!!! haha everyone who said they fit nope they don't was length issues an nipple issues eventually got the perfect cables from Fekked.com

Well just had the first spin out of the year :) second kick she started first issue to sort though clutch is slipping like mad seems like it's barley catching as well bit like a light switch where would you all be starting tensioning the clutch springs?

Springs normally just tightened to be flush with studs, but if you are going in there I would take out plates wash and check for flatness, probably best to put in new springs (RGM ones are best) check center for ridges that can hang up the plates ,I have fitted 1 thou oversize rollers to keep the clutch from wobbling too much ,a push rod seal and only use 20w oil . I use a cheap dial gauge to get the clutch to spin true. I have a giant screwdriver with slot cut to adjust springs as the official tool is junk. Get them badge rubbers on!!. And wire up those exhaust nuts before they Ruin the head!.

Cheers Bob yep got the badge rubbers on :) all rev no go unless I paddle off at the moment so gonna take the clutch apart tomorrow morning an try find out whats going on always had an issue with it been running a few other classics so it's finally time to get the 650ss cranking some miles on. I'll gave a look from memory it's an RGM clutch, good idea regarding the screwdriver an shes got tangs on rather than wiring and damaging a fin :) just weren't folded over in the pic good point though!

Hi Tom
Good to see you back as I followed you when you first brought your Norton and I am building a 650 Cafe Racer but so far haven't done much as have other projects going, as for your clutch I am going to run a open belt on my primary and running a Commando clutch as most of the orginal parts from the Manxman is missing and it was a ex race bike so am keeping it that way it has history.
Anyway your Norton is looking great and keeping it all orginal looking is great if I had the money to buy orginal parts that is missing on my Manxman I would but then it had to much blue for me and a orange/red seat just not my cup of tea.
Good luck sorting your clutch and get them miles up.

Ashley

Hi Ashley great to hear from you :) gotta love Cafe Racers I really like the commando clutch it rocks on my 68 Norton-Villiers commando look forward to seeing how yours develops. Yeah she was to original to go ripping to bits so decided to put the finishing touches to get her back to stock completely just gotta get the rear mudguard drilled an chromed or find an original Iike I did with the front.

Been thinking about the clutch an trying to think back to what I messed with when I was younger trying to cure it.

Know itl be an adjustment just gotta Sus it when you guys refer to flush with the studs do you mean the spring so u can't see it or the top of the nut on the springs to be flush with the studs they sit in

Remember that confused me a bit the last time when I was reading my original manual. Not the greatest at reading the old wording got a Haynes somewhere to so I'll have to dig that out :)

I think it had a tiny bit less slip when I took the play outta the cable although still all rev an no go so would I be right in saying I need more tension on the clutch springs so I can keep the freeplay in the lever.

1am here an lay in bed thinking about it haha! Best get some sleep

Nut tops level with studs, although I do the 99 ones up just enough to stop the slip. Rough up the surface of the metal plates (with emery) which should have a dimpled face . It pays to always keep the plates in the exact same positions as they otherwise take time to bed together. Amazing how easy to do daft stuff, just replaced the gearchange spring that has been happy for 25years although working backwards and the kickstart pawl was happy too although upside down. how did I do that??.
