California are wackos (north and south). Have they banned 2 stroke engines. That's what needs banning
 
The US Energy Information Agency, (EIA) released its Short Term Energy Outlook for December this week. It expects natural gas used to power generating plants to drop from 39% now to 37% in 2023 and renewable will increase from 22% now to 24% in 2023 nation wide average. The shocker is in Texas it predicts solar and wind will provide 37% of electricity generated, up from 30% now and beating out natural gas for the top spot. This is a state where almost every political leader works hard to promote oil and natural gas ahead of renewable energy. I suspect the reason for this is wend and solar are now the less expensive option.

EXACTLY !

Make this stuff genuinely competitive (price and / or performance) and people will adopt it.

Just like I’ve always said about EVs. When they’re the better choice, people will adopt them.

No governments had to ban horses to force the uptake of cars…
 
Economic incentives are much more palatable than mandates. Problem is (from a public policy perspective) that means taxes and subsidies and is seen as regressive policy for those that can't pay to play
 
Anuvver fing about Oxford... I just drove along the A40. Coming off the Wolvercote roundabout and going westwards, the road past the BMW dealers has been reduced to one lane and what was the second lane is now a flowerbed. WTF? They have spent a huge amount of time and effort along the northern bypass and the Cuttesloe roundabout, and now they are strangling the traffic flow at the last roundabout leaving the area.

I am beginning to suspect that the road planners are trying to create congestion.

I didn’t mean economic incentives actually. What I mean is, develop the technology so it is competitive.

That’s exactly what I said in post 173.

They did the same at the other side of Oxford in Fridswide Square, reduced the lanes and built comically massively wide pedestrian walkways, for which there is no need. Resulting in increased congestion.

I‘m very serious about this, I can think of no logical reason other than the deliberate increase of congestion in order to justify their radical congestion measures.

I would welcome any insights to the contrary from anyone…

What a coincidence our council roading engineers have done the same to our city roadways with the same tactic in fact they have plans to put bus lanes down both sides of our city main road way which will eliminate parking outside of the multiple of businesses here in Tauranga New Zealand...people are spewing

I find this all very worrying. As we all know, "monkey see, monkey do." If Oxford Council does get away with doing this, you can be sure that it'll be coming your / our way very soon.
It's all a bit Orwellian "Big Brother."to me

They may be, but more likely is each added/improved road makes people/business move into the area up to a point.

US Route 50 between Washington DC and the Washington Beltway (62 mile road around Washington DC) was under re-construction from most of the 70s. Today, the traffic is better than most roads in the area. As the road was improved and widened in phases, the area became saturated. Today, if you want to build in the area, you must tear something down. In other words, they finally got ahead of the traffic and the amount of traffic is not growing in that area.

Interstate 95/395 from well south of the beltway to Washington DC was under re-construction from the 60s to around 2000. It is fully saturated too, but it bottlenecks going into DC - the re-construction just expanded the tolerable traffic for the outer suburbs and improved the traffic somewhat for those going past DC.

And, it really helped! That is unless you're in the left two lanes on 495 heading west and don't realize what's coming or you in the right lanes and want to go 95 south! I've made both mistakes!

BTW, many years ago more complicated things were in some western state - don't remember which - probably CA.
 
There is a similar motorway junction near Birmingham (UK). It is officially known as the Gravelly Hill Interchange, but is is generally known as spaghetti junction. Very apt.

Before the interchange TomU showed, the area was called the mixing bowl. Think of all those roads at one level - nightmare!

I think most Amercans would find this fairly benign. At least those from major metropolitan areas.

This, however, would be hell on Earth for 99.999% of Americans.

Lots of contraptions like that in Oxford. My Missus used to take the kids to school in a trailer towed by her bicycle (a proper thing by the way… not some thing I made from old Norton parts in the shed. Although I did offer) !!
