Flat battery start

Hey Mak, any chance of a picture of what you’ve done please? Sounds like it could be bloody useful if stranded whilst out on a ride. Thanks :). Easy enough to carry a small power pack and some leads if the bike is playing up a little.
Now you see it now you don’t! Flat battery start

NOCO makes this adapter:

No experience with it, but it looks promising.
I have this cable fitted and concealed behind the frame (RHS) - for a NOCO lithium battery charger (Genius 3500). Very good quality piece of kit. With the short adapter and the NOCO jump starter would’nt even need to carry crocodile clips. Reasonable price also!

My 2018 961 has done around 2800 miles and lived pretty much on trickle charge the whole time. If it hasnt been used for a while it is a pig to start and if it doesn't crank within two attempts, the battery is dead. Never had bad batteries on any bike before,or is it the bike that drains them too much.

Suppose i need to invest in a new one, what's the current advice on the best one to go for

If you stick with an AGM you won't have cold start battery issues.

Managed to get it started over the weekend on the second go, unable to ride so just revved it a bit and all seemed fine. Today, started again but took several goes and the battery held up just but the bike would only tickover. Any slight throttle and it cut out. Started fairly easy each time but again would not allow any revs before conking out. I definitely think the battery is weak, what's AGM Tony

I like the sound of that Noco Boost, shouldn't be necessary but concerned about getting stranded

AGM is (Absorbed Glass Mat) , that is what the Yuasa was from Norton. You will never have to check the water level like on a standard lead/acid ( Flooded ). Most maintenance free batteries are AGM now.

Try new plugs WR.

If the battery is good enough to start the bike it is good enough to allow the motor to run and be blipped...

I fitted a BTS battery BTZ 14S had 2 years and has plenty of punch but like most 961 keep it on trickle charge. If you try to start with volts reading below 11.6 it upsets the ECU and does crazy things to the running, if this happens turn off after a minute or so let the ECU reset and restart, hope this helps. Just fitted rear cush drive rubbers good service from Talon.

I agree.
If the battery was able to crank several times without a problem, the battery is probably not the issue.
How old is the fuel?

The fuel is shell ultimate 99 and bike was last used around November time, possibly a quick ride December, so definitely November fuel.. Having a towbar fitted to a vehicle this week and after a trailer, will get it looked at by new norton

Mine was hopeless at starting until I ripped out the idle air control. One cylinder hopelessly rich and the other lean. You only got one or two cracks at starting it until the rich cylinder flooded and of course not enough fuel in the lean one....

I seem to post this vid on an all to regular basis. Cold start with the idle air control pulled and the shared idle air pipe between the throttle bodies blocked. Perfect start - been that way for years now...

Hi iwilson , How many miles are on the bike now ? You must have racked up a bunch more since .

Would have to check but not a huge amount more. I did a day long ride and swore I'd never do it again, I've never ridden a more uncomfortable bike in my life! So now I tend to just go for blasts around the local area. So in terms of the number of starts it would be comparable to someone with probably double the mileage. I might update the video with the current starting behaviour. :)

I switched to Motobatt when I dumped the Shorai and havent had any issues since. Bike is kept on a MotoBatt tender too when not in use. It tell you exactly what state your battery is in
I have one of these just in case since the Shorai days. Its about the size of the large Iphone so its easy to fit in a jacket pocket etc. You dont need to carry the clamps of course., get the pigtail kit.
This one wire allows you to charge the battery with a regular SAE plug and then switch to jump device (if needed)
