Clutch Location Circlip

Hi All,

Does anyone have supplier details or part number for the alternative clutch locating circlip, the one that overlaps itself and is a real PITA to install?

I did a search here but can't seem to find reference to it.

I think what you mean is the 068072 anti-backfire circlip?......

....however, it doesn't overlap and shouldn't be "a PITA to install" but does require thinning down.

Hi Don, A few years ago my main-shaft nut came undone and the clutch fell off. I had the ignominy of being collected on a breakdown truck.

It turned out that the tab washers are mild steel and not up to 30 years of slight movement. Slowly, then more quickly they thin to nothing
and then fail to hold the nut tight.

I bought a Belleville washer from Comnoz to replace the tab washer.

And it also stoped the clicking sound which I thought maybe was the camshaft failing.

Yup, that's the circlip we should be using in the main shaft clutch support recess. Buy a few because any circlip can twist with removal getting it out of the slot and slid along the main shaft. I used emery cloth on a flat surface and using a circular motion removed small amounts , checking fit to the groove by pressing it by hand beside the shaft until it pushed into the slot tightly , then stopped the sanding , cleaned it up, over the shaft and slid home. Tapped it into place lightly with a flat head punch. No more clutch rocking !
Yes 45 lbs. of torque is adequate , not 70 which can crush the stock thin circlip. That leads to clutch wobble which can lead to main shaft nut becoming loose. The soft main shaft tab washer is soft and gets crushed too ,leading to more wobble . Harder steel best.

The circlip I used previously, which is still on the shaft and in great shape, was purchased through a member here, I just can't remember who, though seeing the comments, it may have been Comnoz. It's not a Norton part. I thought I'd bought 3 at the time, but perhaps I've lost them during a house move.
Failing this, I'll go with the genuine Norton part mentioned above.

Looks perhaps crushed ? Or perhaps 2 jammed in there ? The whole idea is as tight a fit with the one recommended as you can get.

That's the one clip, it coils around like the large 'clutch spring retaining circlip'.

STD clip, new and crushed.
Fatter clip on a "tool" to sand it down to 1.5 mm.
( saves the skin of your index vinger..)

Nice tool. This is the way to do it. No bleeding finger tips.

How do you install or remove this? The gap isn't big enough to get a spreader in there.

Check out Smalley Spirolox website for instructions on installation. basically it is a spring, just wind it into the slot (once you get the thickness corrected).

I just bought a couple of these and they're solid with a very small gap (as in none) like shown in Ludwig's pic. It's not a spiral like you suggest. I can spread it with a knife edge, but I'd be afraid it'd never come out of the mainshaft slot if needed.
