I'm in the process of replacing the primary drive and I'm not positive that this is the way the clutch hub shims are located.
Sorry about the giant photos, the new photobucket just stinks. I can't resize successfully anymore.

There is a space between the circlip and where the mainshaft exits the drive sprocket hub.

The locating washer has a recess machined into it that fits over the circlip.

Then shims are stacked against the washer.

There is still a space between the locating washer and the drive sprocket hub, is that the way is supposed to be?
Also, another question. What gear should the transmission be in when replacing the outer cover. Does it effect the shifting rachet assembly.

Thanks for your help.

That looks proper. Only use as many shims as needed to line up the hubs. Just because you took off three does not mean that you should put 3 back on. It may be 2 or 3 or 4 or 1.

Also, the sharp edge of the circlip goes toward the gearbox.

Although it will not matter in theory, when the hole is in a good position to receive the shift pin is what makes the job easiest. Seems I alway use neutral.

And don't tighten the hub nut to 70 ft-lbs. 35-40 will do and use some blue locktite.

Just installing a new belt drive and got concerned about this... mine looks very similar.
Just does not seem correct that the 06-0747 spacer and circlip sit so far from the back of primary.
About 1/4" gap in there. Why?
Would be more logical to me if both were closer to back of primary.

Logical is a very fuzzy word with old British machinery ,but order in circlip (or 2 ) 06-8072 as it is thicker to fit into the main shaft circlip slot. In true British fashion you will have to fetter it in order to drop into the slot fully home. It's thicker so I rubbed it a bit thinner using a circular motion on emery paper until it dropped into place with a couple of small persuasive taps with a small flat-faced punch. Make sure this thicker circlip is fully seated home as it has a big job to do.

Reviving and old thread/question. In the pictures above no shims behind the clip (on the gearbox side?
So no support on the back side of the clip and backside of the spacer with the relief?

Correct, as there's nothing on the gearbox side of the circlip to support any spacers.
