fav artists in different genres of music?

2weeks ago I gave all my vinyl to a friend's son as he had been given a Bluetooth turntable by his dad. He has discovered John Mayall and all my old heroes with scratches etc. All my collection is Digi now as I live in a shoebox of a house, and the hearing isn't as good to be a critic. I miss the artwork covers but know where they are, and not in landfill. Another friend did point out that you cannot roll a herbal cigarette on a MP3 though !!!
 
I think I have about 1200 LPs. As many CDs. A harddrive full of FLAC files, which can rival vinyl for emotional sound.

Anybody can give me their old vinyl. I have some knackered Amals I would.trade. LOL

Mingus, Miles, Brubeck, Horace Silver.

LCD Soundsystem, Sugur Ros are a couple of the best shows I have ever seen.

Wilco, REM, Black Keys.

Old The Who, Floyd, Stones, CCR.

Johnny Cash, Robert Johnson, Hank Sr.

I could go on all day...
 
Yup , my vinyl was culled by a long gone boy friend of my daughter ... only a couple hundred left , a growing number of CD though mostly replacing what disappeared , lots of cassette format as well , haha!-

I listen to this family group a lot. Mom on bass, Dad on rythym guitar. Dad is also a sound engineer. They do all their recording in their own home studio. The equipment is old analog stuff they found in defunct studios. They feel that modern digital equipment doesn't give the right sound for their music.


 
I love tube audio. Just bought a few NOS tubes for my preamp a few days ago. Even had to fettle it and take a dremel to the bakelite base so it would fit in the tube damper.

I have three tube amps as well, and hundreds of tubes. Changing tubes gives different sonic characteristics. Kinda like going from a Hi rider to Interstate to Roadster by changing tin ware.
 
I like a very wide range of music from blues, jazz and bluegrass to classical and modern jazz. But I have found that music sounds different in a car than it does in a lounge room. I dow load full albums from Youtube as MPEG4s, then convert them to MP3s using Any Video Converter. I can fit about 15, 50 minute full albums onto a 640 Megabyte CD data disc, which will play in the 6-stacker in my car. I have tried a lot of music, but the best in the car is by JJ Cale. In the lounge room, Jacques Loussier playing Bach is good. I don't know why, but I really like Ry Cooder - there is not much of him on Youtube.
I don't like The Beatles much, but George Harrison is pretty good. Of the Stones, Ron Wood is good when he is on his own album or with Ronnie Lane
Some of the covers of modern songs using single instruments are excellent.

Ry Cooder is a bit of a undercover musicians musician. He's all over the place, you just gotta know where to look...

Back when I was a professional musician, we used to bring "finished" takes out to the car, if it sounded good on the car stereo we knew we were getting there. The idea being that most people would hear a song for the first time on the radio in their car, so you are right on track Al.

There is a quote about it but I can't remember from whom.
 
Saw Ry Cooder a few times in the mid seventies at the Main Point in BrynMawr PA . My fav was Boomer’s Story . Great intimate venue - plus it was nearly next-door to YBM Motorcycles - a Norton Dealer !
But the show I will always remember- same era - Glassboro State College ( now Rowan University) . I attended Glassboro for two years and then, in one of my brighter life decisions, quit to be a carpenter. I was still playing guitar at the time - mostly folk/bluegrass genre. Two musician buddies and I went back to Glassboro as non students to a concert in the gym.
The top billing was Bruce Springsteen but I was far more interested in the opening act - Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny.
No seats - everyone sitting on the gym floor. Waiting and waiting for the show to begin when eventually the MC comes on stage and apologetically announces that Springsteen had to cancel due to weather. All money refunded if you leave but if you were staying for Fairport you got all back but 50 cents - 90 % of the crowd moaned and left. Fairport and Ms Denny came on and did a double set with a very small crowd gathered around the stage literally at her feet . All for 50 cents.
