Suddenly every page on Access Norton has large banner ads inserted in between the topic lines. Several per screen. I have never seen this before. Anybody know what's going on?

I had this issue before I paid the VIP membership.

Nothing since.

Yep. No ads when you pay to help support this forum.

I am not concerned by ads but riddle me this....

For some time now I have noticed post numbers dropping and even when there are five in day it seems less that 50% of them relate to Norton Commando's (real ones)
If it was not for all the political ramblings some days there would be next to no activity.
Is Access Norton all lurkers or folk who have nothing to add or say these days.
I see five new posts in the side bar today and one is Commando related.

I had not been to BritBike.com for some time and when I signed in a virtual tumble weed went by.
If it was not for one person posting Craigslist links there it would be near deserted.
Even ADV Rider seems down on new posts these days.
Is it the faceless FaceBook at work, the enemy of being social.
#
No doubt this thread will be moved to some obscure forum to fade away with the others but I can not be the only one to have noticed.

Edit.
Oh dear, this post has now bumped the battery thread so there is not one Commando post to be seen on the main page.

Maybe everybody has their commando running so sweet that they don't need to post anything?
And they are all out riding?
Or maybe have got too old to ride so the bike sits in the heated garage like an ornament?
A very reliable ornament!
Cheers

Well hobot stopped posting a while back so that halved the number of posts - where are you Steve, we miss you.
Just looked and I first joined here in 2004 ! Pretty much all my classic Commando queries have been asked and answered in that period. I suspect many others are in the same boat, and some drift off as a result.
The 961 is the gift that keeps on giving at the moment, but to a minority audience only I suppose.

My question was why have these ads SUDDENLY started appearing on Access Norton. Three people tell me that the ads don't appear if you pay to become a member, which may be true, but doesn't answer the question.
Perhaps Time Warp's comment about the low number of responses on the forum is relevant. About a year ago a pissing match took place about who was paying and who wasn't, and who was welcome and who wasn't. Around that time I kind of lost interest in the forum. I probably wasn't the only one.

Hello Stephen.

First off, let me say that the advice received here has been great and possibly life-saving given the gearbox layshaft bearing and foot brake return spring mods.

Low number of responses? I can't speak for others, but after fettling various other British machines since my 20's, my enthusiasm for Norton Commandos vastly outweighs my actual "Norton" experience. Recently, a poster commented that some posts may have contained hack advice. While this may be true, I want nothing I post on these forums to be considered as such. Given this, I am containing the enthusiasm a bit and will be more of a lurker than in the past year.

In the garage today reinstalling the timing cover after the AMR mods. After sitting on the shelf for a year, the Tri-Spark ignition is also going into the point cover. (Will carry the Pazon for a while.)

To call anyone taking the time to try to help you a hack is not polite even though you may not agree with their suggested methods. Wisdom and manners would dictate just keeping a zipper on it because there may come that one time they have the only sound answer to your problem. Rudeness is not an admirable trait in anyone.

These days I delete most of the replies I type because when given second thought I don't feel like putting up with somebody raging about some bit in it that they find offensive.

People prefer attitude over opinion it seems. But I think its why things get slow. If you read threads from a number of years ago they would have a lot of interesting conversations included in them as opposed to personal attacks.

I have over 3,000 posts on here, mostly because I'm not afraid to ask stupid questions. I'm very grateful to those who have answered them for me. So as a result I still try to help the new kids on the block. I've got nothing to teach to those who already know all of it.

As for the ads, I don't know what to say. I remember the dust up over the VIP memberships as I got labeled as a classist for making a joke. If I want to listen to Spotify for free, I get ads. If I want to watch public (no fee) television, I get ads. It's the way of it with almost everything.

It's winter, cant ride my bike so nothing has broken. So, no questions to ask here about fixing.

Spent too much time being a jackass in the political threads so I guess I'll be back when something breaks...

But that's just me. Ads support the operational costs of the site. As that is what ads do, only the owner operator of this forum knows for sure......

I use adblocker for certain sites, works for me !

Google: Ad blockers, some are freeware. Let Google help you block Google ads; I find that humorous.

Regarding low response/post numbers, it's winter in the northern hemisphere, the Aussies are fighting major fires and I'm pretty sure that the Kiwis are helping; air quality is poor at best. The news jackals around here have moved on and are inventing new adjectives to enhance current low grade crimes/fires/muggings, you get the point.

Keep in mind that we are a dying breed. Motorcycle sales are dwindling, but pricing isn't. Gen Xers and the Millennials are not buying motorcycles much less antiques and any appreciable numbers. Prior to the financial woes that started in 2008 antique motorcycles sold for very high prices faster than they could be dragged out of proverbial barns. The last time I attended a Norton meeting the bulk of the dialog was centered on arthritis, joint replacement, cardiac catheterization and other maladies associated with age.

I stopped looking at my stable of mechanical British pets as "investments" years ago; I consider these engine driven dinosaurs as my one of my prime raison d'être. Some days I do little more than look at my bikes and bask in the memories, some days I fire them up and bring the memories up to date. I would like to die while exploiting my Norton's potential, if something else gets me you can damn well bet my "viewing", prior to cremation, will show an Amal twist grip in my right hand...

Stop bitching!

Best.

I am only on two forums, Norton Access and Triumph Rat and I have no problems with ADs if it helps the site work, I like to renew my VIP membership soon but no longer working and self funded pension, money has become tight, 3 rego bikes and a car to keep on the road as well bills and cost of living makes things hard and everything is going up all the time, even no longer paying taxes the GOV is still getting their big cut on everything we buy and after 44 years of owning my Norton if there is anyway I can help others, then I am doing my bit, if I can also add a bit of humor in my post, just to cheer everyone up.
Anyway just enjoy what we have and to the people who keep this site going thanks to Jerry and Les as it is my enjoyment to come on my two favorite site each day even if not much is happening, I am always happy to help where I can without judging others, without abuse, its all about friendships as well with people who have the same interest and likes and yes I miss our old friend Steve, but I am sure he is lurking.

Ashley

Hello,

I have checked the ad settings. If you are not a VIP the ads should be at the top or bottom of the forums only. It seems like nothing has changed. Please send me a screen shot if you see anything different,

thanks
Jerry

just this morning I was getting multiple ads in between posts. It was unusual and quite annoying.
