Flat battery start

Could you get a portable jump starter battery? I carry one that claims it can start a car about 8 times. Fits in my riding jacket pocket. Looks similar to this:

Also cab be used for USB device charging and mine has a flash light function. Very handy when you have a dodgey battery condition.

I had to use one like this yesterday connected at the starter motor and earthed on the head bolt, I was on a three day ride had done 450km first day and 250 km 2nd day woke up to a cold morning frost the bike wound over strongly but wouldn't fire, 2nd time not so strong then next the dreaded clicking, when I did hook it up I had to give it some throttle too the standard start wouldn't cut it, the bike is 3 1/2 I had from new and it has always apart from overnight trips been on trickle charge, I'll get a new battery but I think I'll be investing in one of these too.
I only got 3 years out of my stock Yuasa and always left on a tickle charger except for the 14 months at the dealership. I went with the Yuasa again.

I forget....did you find and sae adapter for that? I never got stuck due to battery problems, but there's always a first time.

I did install the heavy duty SAE cable they offered with the unit. The only trouble is that it's diode protected so I can't use a typical battery charger with it. :( Had I removed the tank once more I could have added a second cable with an SAE connector for charging.

The rusty old Rudge had lain in the damp shed for 60 years ,with a bit of petrol in the tank and a push up the lane off it went, Thats progress for you. Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood, sold the Ulster for a tenner , now thats really made me sad.

A jump start as in you’re stranded or your battery is dead at home?
if you’re home, you’re better off pulling the tank off.

My portable jumpstarter has aligator clamps to connect to battery posts. Used is a few times for modern e-start Bonneville and some cars. Works pretty well.

The positive terminal on the starter is under a rubber shroud cover , clamp on that chunky terminal, earth on anywhere else , I’ve started mine twice like that
But Beware; really easy to short jump lead onto engine casing!!!!

What I have just done is to fit a heavy duty battery terminal to the starter motor positive connection.
First of all it was seized solid so took a lot of WD 40.
Then fitted the terminal.
I now have somewhere to clamp on the crocodile clip when jump starting without arcing on anything.
When not used it is covered with a small rubber boot and is hardly visible.

One thing to bear in mind is that my solenoid seemed to go total short circuit. Took it in under warranty and was told that the terminal inside the casing had come loose and rotated against the case. The ****##!! then accused me of messing with it and tried to charge me for the work!!!! (Two hours after the phone call the Administrators walked in and cleared the site but I'm sure this wasn't really divine intervention....)

I've been looking for a motorsport based starter connector. I have chunky 90A connectors for R/C models not sure if one of those would cope compared to a couple of teeth making contact on a pressed steel starter lead croc clip?

This is a problem..but there is not enough room under the tank to fit the dedicated fly lead.
I have a Moto Bat fitted and it has four battery terminals. Still not enough!!!!

Hey Mak, any chance of a picture of what you’ve done please? Sounds like it could be bloody useful if stranded whilst out on a ride. Thanks :). Easy enough to carry a small power pack and some leads if the bike is playing up a little.

It would of been nice if Simon designed the 961 with the fuse box and battery inside the tail instead of the battery under the tank.
Easier to access the battery. And more fuel tank capacity.

installing a battery cut off switch would be a easy job.

That wouldn’t be good at all...
Mrs Mak would have to get the bus!!
