Winter Storage

This year my Norton will be in a below freezing storage unit. Every winter I always drain the gas completely and remove the drain plugs from the float bowls (later type bowls). Then I make a hang tag to remind myself to screw the bowl plugs back in and tighten the fuel hose fittings.

This year I also sprayed it down lightly with Kroil to prevent rust. I don't know when it will be emerging again. Maybe never. Having too much fun on the XR.

Seems like most of you drain the fuel out of your tanks for the winter but I think it might be better to add a good dose of Stabil to ethanol-free fuel and fill the tank to the rim. Seems to me like this is more likely to exclude water and less likely to lead to corrosion than leaving it empty. Thoughts?

Yes the more air space the more moisture sucked in to condense on weather changes. With no booze gas and stabil I've had movers set up 3 yr crank up fine and mow on the stuff, so that's exactly what's in my over head farm tank in 91 oct. Some can't get or don't know if much booze in the gas or how long til they return, then dry storage with a moisture packet makes sense. Winter gas tends to evaporate more than summer fuel but don't know how effect storage life but maybe summer a bit better to store. Do give some thought about tire leak down, which may foul something on return. If disc brake might consider rag wrap in case some brake fluid weeps with pressure changes so don't drool dissolve-able things. Ethanol should be reserved for sterilization and getting mellow, so I use acetone to take up any suspect water. IIRC acetone is big part of what makes brake fluid so mean. Its also what make glue sniffers mean to I'll tell ya. Not me thankyou.

Anyone else out there have any tips or tricks for cold weather storage?[/quote]

Hobot, move to southern Arizona and ride through the winter  :P

When if ever I get Ms Peel finished she'll have power enough to microwave me and warm riders around me besides shielding me from wind and snow and hail so year round use planned as only way to get anything back out of the endless investing. 2/3+ of my life was in southern Fla and Texas, so know about all year long summer with a cold spell now and then. Last 2 winters I put ole Peels windscreen and hand shields on Trixie Combat so commuted 20 miles on the less messy days. This year Trixie kicker quit but I've kinda of sworn off working in temps my hands and neck get too cold so who knows when I'll ride a real mc again. My SV650 got set up last few winters d/t real mc working but it started up fine with boozed gas and no oil change, so confused on what wisdoms apply to me.
