It's hard to compare highly modded or otherwise improved Commandos that are loaded with upgrades with the factory stock or nearly stock examples. If the changes/upgrades are proven and/or reliable then the modified bike will almost certainly work better than the stock late '60's and 70's. I think all the stock variants are pretty much "the same but different". At least the Roadsters and Interstates.

I wouldn't say there was a lot of "dishing" (dissing?) of the Mark III. Just from me!

Let's put it this way, The MKIII is like the ugly as a man but even uglier as a woman transsexual with three day old stubble, standing on a street corner in a two sizes too small leopard print mini dress. You respect his/her right to exist, but I'm not hooking up with you!!!!!

Because of the above crack, I am officially retracting the "pompous remark attributed to your post in the other thread. I am now calling you "pompous". If you are still fooling around, well then you got me. At any rate "Over and Out.

Too good an opportunity to miss!

Don't take it so hard. All in fun.

I've always been happy with my MkI 850, which has been in my garage for 8 years now and has traveled 20,000 miles with me.

My favorite bike is the Ranger, though. More comfortable riding position, 50 lb lighter, tighter turning radius. Was the look the Commando Roadster is based on.

Yes it is not a Commando, but was built between the 68 Commando run and the 69 production.

My preference is a 750 commando ,I have owned an 850 mk2a ,a 750 combat and the one I have now a 750 fastback, I prefer the 750 frame with 27° rake and I prefer the lighter weight of pre mk111 commandos ,but I think it depends on the rider ,how you ride etc and what you want from the bike,I like to rev mine out and a lot of people don't so maybe pick a bike with your style of riding in mind

I had a black Mk III Interstate for a time that I bought, cleaned up and resold after a time. It was a good 2-up machine. The electric leg worked fairly well and the bike was remarkable in that it had no leaks and hadn't been touched other than the carb cleaning and tune-up I gave it. it was heavy compared to the '71, especially with a full tank.

My first Commando was a 750 drum brake bike. I swapped out the drum brakes for disc brakes, the standard engine for a Maney, standard Roadster tank with a Norvil etc etc.

With the spares, I built a standard 750 drum brake Roadster. The only things I added were a CNW breather and Trispark, otherwise just refreshed everything including new Isolastics, wiring harness, steering head bearings and swing arm.

Guess which is my favourite?

Yep, the drum brake bike that I started with. It's the bike that puts a smile on my face every time.

Not my initial thought. More along the lines of "red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme". But a Testarossa would be nice.

Just an example of how to bring an old post forward. Can be done because I wrote something in it.

Lets see some more though.

I REALLY don't see where you get that from? Tell me why this MkIII Roadster looks ANY different from a MkII Roadster? (apart from the rear disc & bean cans)

This statement tells us that you are secretly fascinated and desirous of the MK3. Not only that , there is something else going on there......oh dear, best to look away!!!

Yes, me thinks he duth protest too much.

Sometimes the humor is far greater than the information. Fullauto's description is one of those times.

I've been there. 2 o'clock in the morning on a downtown Seattle street and me fairly well blitzed. She didn't look bad until I saw her under a street light. Not enough makeup to cover the beard. I make it a rule to never hook up with a woman who has a heavier beard than myself.

Armchair psychologists! Delusional as always. This post has been exhumed, dusted off, given a new dress, had a bit of makeup applied, a stick shoved up it's arse, sorry, ass (for the Yanks who can't spell properly) and placed on a pedestal.

The carcass is like a MKIII. Bloated and given a new lease of life for effeminate posers who wouldn't know how to kickstart a big Brit twin to save their lives or how to deal with a gearshift on the correct side.

Take it back to the mortuary ladies! It's on the nose!

My non running 71 somewhere there is a picture of me at 4 years old riding with dad. I was scared shittles. Then we dumped in some sand by the mailbox . Good times

A lot of "dishing" of the MKIII in the other thread.

I own an MKIII that when I got it was missing the e-start. It started first kick after I sorted the engine since it hadn't run in 10 years, so you can just remove it if the extra weight bothers you. I also owned an MKIII new back in the day. I had a number of Brit bikes including a 1967 BSA Spitfire Hornet. The difference between the BSA and the Norton even though the Norton was considered a compromise bike was ride quality and smoothness. The BSA would vibrate my hands numb. The Norton never did that. The BSA was quicker and lighter.

Today I look at the Norton MKIII as a classic Brit bike with looks and style that I can ride and enjoy. I've left the speed and craziness behind long ago. The slight performance difference from earlier Commandos is really of no matter to me.

In terms of performance I have other newer bikes that will out run and out handle the Norton that I can ride if I need a thrill. Sorry to say that they didn't cost me an arm and a leg like a built up Norton would...only to have a bike that still would never compare to any of them. The Norton is a pure classic and fun...that's it's place for me. Any Norton is a wonderful bike to own so I have no argument which is better.

I missed this earlier post. I think that is way over the top. What would you say if the MKIII was parked next to a Harley? It's still a Commando...there are good things and bad things about it. I liked the first one I had in 75 and like the one I have now. Getting too old to kick my bikes over...and can't afford the aftermarket e-starts. I don't need the Norton to go fast because I have bikes that can do that.

My preferred and only Commando ran well on Saturday. Had the owner of the Thrux R scratching his head after a spirited ride.
"So is that a STOCK Commando? I had no idea they could go like that?"
Normally no chance against a bike like the Thrux, but I picked the road.

Old age and Treachery sometimes wins out.

You guys are no fun! I was pissing myself as I was composing it, just waiting for the intelligently witty responses, and......nothing. It can be lonely and disappointing on here sometimes.

It's hard to get worked up about a single carb guy who never goes above five grand and thinks he's really sporty!
I don't think those car rims on there are doing much for you either .
All written in my best OZ.
