What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Greg Marsh (member marshg246) I would think.
You can’t go wrong going with Greg Marsh.Great to deal with and you will get the proper ones for your bike. I have had no carb problems since going with the Premiers

Yep. Thanks fellas. I'm chatting with Greg now to get the right setup. I'm also going to try Les' idea of "adjusting" my Amals, and maybe using steel wool on the inside to clean things up, and emery cloth on the slide to see if I can get it to slide again.

Using Emory cloth will get it to move but it's a one way ticket
You will be using up material and accelerating wear
And will lead to rough running

Yes, good point. I'll start with very fine steel wool to clean things up, then try, and then try to adjust the barrel with grips. I'll get a new set of Premiers from Greg anyway, so I'm ok with that one way ticket I can get to ride while I wait for the Premiers.

Well, I gave it a shot. Some gripping of the barrel to correct the distortion worked some and the slide dropped down but then tightened up again and more manipulation resulted in more distortion. It is a very gentle job and too much manipulation with the barrel using channel locks can throw it all off, as I think has happened to me. I'll let it sit overnight. I'm going to see if Greg can sort a new Premier for me for this week and I can get it installed and ride this weekend.

I've tried all that in the distant past. Buy new Premiers . Bite the Bullet . $orry.

Can you measure with a tele gauge and micrometer to find the small bit . And tweak to suit .?

I'v had good luck using a ''C'' clamp, right to left not front to back, as low on the bore as you can, between the tickler and the Amal logo. On the ones I'v dealt with that's where the distortion is. Can be done on the bike.

I'll try that rweb. I've kinda given up on it for the time being so that I can catch up on work, but will try again Friday, or later today.
One thing I learned today talking with Greg Marsh is that there's supposed to be an insulator between the head and the intake manifold. My 850 does not have this. Just a paper gasket is there. The heat transfer from the head to the carbs over time could have contributed to this distortion and I consider myself lucky that I don't ride very far other wise I could have had a fuel boil over or fire with the carbs directly coupled like that to the head. With the Premiers coming on Friday I am getting a set of insulators as well to assemble it correctly this time. I'm looking forward to the work. Tuning of the Premiers will be a bit of a new thing for me since it's been a while, and I don't really have any instruments to do this. I know that there's a lot of threads on this out there so I plan to look through them to find a method that I can use.

Working on a new ignition cylinder bracket to go with my Mikuni. I have your basic garage shop tools and this so far is what I have come up with. Still need paint but autoparts were out of what I wanted. Any suggestions

I don't know why people have so much trouble with the inside manifold allen head bolts, I have been using the short allen key that came with my Norton tool kit from the factory since new, yes the first one is a little tricky but don't take to long or isn't that hard and once the first manifold is off the second one is even easier, maybe I just have a knack of undoing things on my Norton and maybe who ever cuts down a allen key to fit might need to cut a bit more off, but what ever I don't have any troubles at all.

Hey Ash, why don't you post some photos or a video of your well refined technique and share it with those who struggle.
It never occurred to me that after the first manifold is removed, thus allowing easier access to the second, it would be easier to get off.
I for one would be very anxious to view your specialized knack with no troubles at all.
Impressive.

Re-re-re-routed my throttle & choke cables.

The birds nest of 50 year old loom is still there taking up most of the spare frame space (it will soon get sorted), but I dropped it from between the top beams and fed the cable through there.

Got halfway through installing the pipes (but have to break away for a works do).

Blimey Charlie, the balance pipe is a proper Grade-A pain in the arse.

I am seriously tempted to ditch them and get the straight pipes. Which ones do we recommend? Les Harris? AN 750's?

Bonzo - I have a brand new set of balance pipes from AN that are gathering dust. I have a set of Les Harris pipes and, yes, EMGO pipes as well, both new. I will use the EMGO pipes to break in my current restoration and the next bike I have in the garage, then shift over to the permanent pipes. In both cases, neither will be balanced pipes.

I just finish installing my old Amal carbs so now to tune them in after removal of the PWK carbs, the old Amals I had to pull off again after finding one had a blocked pilot jet even after major pull down before fitting, it can be a bit orchard to get the first middle allen head bolt out but having the allen key cut to the right size makes it easy and once one carb is off the next middle allen head bolt is easy, its common sense to remove one manifold first, I been building and working on my old Norton for over 46 years so know all the easy ways of doing things, I make my life easy not harder lol.
Having the original allen key that is cut to the right size that came in the original Norton took kit helps, I have used one that was cut down and it wasn't as easy as the original tool kit one.
