What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

Woke up after nightshift, 2 coffees and brekky , Road commando in to get a warrant of fitness , a m/mechanic that works from home , there were triumphs nortons, and a harley and some Japanese bikes there , it passed ok , but swingarm will have to be done soon , I already have the parts, have to do that before summer .

You know, now that I compare the alignment you've got with what I can see in my valve train, mine are quite misaligned and not as centered as yours where the tappets connects with the valves there.

On the drive side inlet you may just be able to make out that I used 3 shims to centre the rocker on the valve tip.

I have always done away with the Thackeray washers and shimmed the rocker to the centre of the valve
But recently I have read on here the rocker should be offset to encourage valve rotation

In my mind the Thackeray washers were used to simplify production assembly and cost...they are long gone as well...

Single Premier Concentric was continuously flooding before roadworthiness annual test: took float bowl off- all looked very clean until removing float and needle: shard of off-white plastic lodged across needle seat. Simple solution for once!

Took my commando to the seaside
Had a nice rum and raisin double cone
The name of this boat tickled me !

Put new air & throttle cables on and spent ages trying different routings, finally settling back with the original routings (until I thin out the current wiring spaghetti), also installed the new Premiers and spent another ages (?!) on the two middle manifold screws.

Starting to look like a bike again :)

I don't want to know how many Allen wrenches I have "modified" to try and gain easier access to the two middle manifold screws you mentioned,
but I did create some new words while working on them.

Around 40 odd years ago I ground an Allen key to a ball end
Cut it off and welded it to an 8mm bolt that I put a 13mm spanner on the end
It works pretty good,I still have it

I don't know why people have so much trouble with the inside manifold allen head bolts, I have been using the short allen key that came with my Norton tool kit from the factory since new, yes the first one is a little tricky but don't take to long or isn't that hard and once the first manifold is off the second one is even easier, maybe I just have a knack of undoing things on my Norton and maybe who ever cuts down a allen key to fit might need to cut a bit more off, but what ever I don't have any troubles at all.

Yes , fit down one carby first , then the next.

Hey guys, since we're talking about carbs, I wonder if any of you guys have had a slide stiffen up on you to the point where it won't slide any longer and is tight. I noticed this the other day when I was riding that there was a noticeable slack in my throttle and today over my lunch break I took the tops off the carbs and noticed that the right side slide was sticking and wouldn't move freely and wouldn't go down easily or come up easily. I had to use my needle nose grips to pull it back up. Is that a sign of the carb going?

Yikes! Warped bores...Bummer. I definitely don't have tools to correct that. Maybe I should go with a new set of Premiers?

You can attempt to straighten a warped carb using Channellocks:

Hmm. Thanks Les! Kind of a brutish method, but just might work. Worth a try anyway. I'll see if I can rig something.
If not, any suggestions where I can get a good tested set of Premiers?
