What batteries are people using with an Alton electric start?

Standard bulbs as the Prince of Darkness intended! However, with lights on, the battery is discharging below around 2k RPM. With lights off, battery is charging at idle. LED headlight would, I assume, allow charging at idle.

As has been stated, the fully-charged voltage for a Shorai is higher than for a flooded battery. Therefore, my Shorai is NEVER fully charged. Based on voltage checks, it has lived all these years at around 80% charged. So, although in theory that's bad, in reality, it has had no adverse impact at all.

I use the Varna suggested by Alton. Coming up to two years, works perfectly.
