There is a 12mm bore master cylinder sold by Wassell, which an American ebay seller is offering, among others. He says the quality looks ‘dandy’.
It has correct switch mounting incorporated, and a rectangular reservoir. Matching clutch lever also available. Very reasonably priced.

So, anybody fitted one yet??

Get yourself a 1/2" Nissin m/c as fitted to various Honda 125 & 250cc models. These are available in almost new condition for around £35 on Fleabay. It wouldn't be difficult to make the adapter bracket.

hi,
I was just wondering.I assumed that the reduced bore kit would be the logical answer.
I fitted one, it was easy and has greatly improved the brake. What is the advantage of getting a totally new (and non standard) master cylinder.
This is a genuine question.
Regards,
Alan

That would really depend on the quality of the new part! If you have a genuine part that is not corroded internally, change the seals if you are confident in the source of the seals and your skills. Some have had less satisfaction from the re-sleeving, if it went well great.

Obviously the main point for the OP is changing the actual item to get the desired bore size, anything between 12 and 14 will be an improvement on the original Norton/AP Lockheed parts. 13 probably suits most riders in most circumstances, but there is an element of personal preference, lever movement versus feel.

I have used 14mm Honda CB550 replica parts, as sold by David Silver in the UK and by many others as Kawasaki replica, also in 15.8mm for dual discs. The quality is good and I have had good service from them. They were about £50 each a few years ago. I am currently using a replica 12.7mm Brembo part and find I really have to keep on top of bleeding when leaving the bike unused. With use it's absolutely fine.

I imagine they are made in China, which in itself is not a measure of quality, they are capable of delivering high spec or shite, depending on what the buyer will pay. Of course, this leaves plenty of room for the unscrupulous middleman. And you are dealing with safety!

However, even if the unit is well made and assembled as far as I can see, the main issue can be the quality of the seals used.

With Wassell 'Genuine Girling' calipers, that really aren't genuine at all, Wassell bough the Girling name. They are copies of the AP Lockheed race calipers, as far as I know, made in China, and I think they are a good example of what can be achieved in Chinese factories. They are fairly good quality, but I have changed the seals for genuine AP before installation. Pistons, bore and everything else compares well with genuine AP items. But be aware that the threads are metric not imperial, they do come with banjo bolts, so this isn't a huge issue!

On these, the difference is minimal. On some items, I suspect the machining can be poor and the seals all but useless.

Buy from a reputable source and you should be fine.

Once the bore size issue is sorted then no advantage, especially if you want to use the original switchgear and the new one is not adapted for the switchgear.
