317848 to 321120
320000 to 329999

(I'm still very interested in straightening this out)

Either I'm reading it wrong, or the third line from the bottom has it's higher number falling within the range of the second line from the bottom. If that's the case, you could eliminate the bottom two lines and replace the higher number in the third from the bottom row with the higher number on the bottom line.

You're not reading it wrong but that's what it says on the AN website, so if you really want an answer that badly, then I suggest you get in touch with AN (or PM 'ZFD') Edit: The 'Record of Destination' book on the top of the pile in the AN photo does say '320000 to 329999' so perhaps there are entries in two different books for that period?

SLIGHT PROMBLEM WITH DVLA

MANY THANKS
RICHARD

I have 314193, which has a vin plate date stamp of 04/74

I don't mean to offend anyone but ..... bureaucrats sure can be a pain in the butt at times , remember when the nice lady clerk at Motor Vehicle Registry would make sure you had all your paper in order , sometimes with a wink and a nod , to get you on the road .... plus, generally wish you a nice day ..... I have my '72 750 Norton registered now as a Classic , cheaper road tax and no inspections .... when I was getting it done a couple of years back they noticed it was previously listed as a Black 850 cc Roadster ..... I got the aforementioned wink and nod and was on my way ..... pretty much made my day ....

Regardless of the painful tragedies great persons have forgone , please allow this thread to come to a conclusion.

Nods and winks no longer work with the DVLA, they have shut all the local offices and inspection stations down, you can only communicate using post, phone or email using their website. Its a lottery who you get to answer and whether they even know their own rules.

Re: DATE

I have 316716, mfg Jun '74. Using my number and Dave's lowest number (316716-316385 = 331) would we surmise that at least 331 bikes were mfg in June '74? Anyone else have a serial number larger or smaller than those quoted for June '74 mfg so we can expand the number of bikes mfg in June '74?
The bike in the avatar, which I recently acquired, has a vin of 316040 June 74. Vin tag, engine, gearbox all matching. Also original title, so you can add at least 350 more bikes to your June 74 production count.

It seems that for '74 at least, the 3rd digit corresponds to the month of manufacture - based on the above sample only...
However, I can see no such correlation for any other year, either before or after. Funny old world

That’s an interesting observation. It would be interesting for someone to come back with an October November December build. Would 1000 numbers a month be enough

1000 per month production rate?

That’s what I’m wondering. I guess on the numbers quoted above that makes sense. But I would have thought at that time they would have been making more than 12000 a year

Over on the 'Other Norton's forum, we are comparing VIN's and month dispatched. From data there, it seems they produced only 1200 Atlas's in 3 months, so 1000 Cdos per month would have been quite an increase.

Somewhere, there is a chart of Vin Numbers by year. I searched for that chart recently to no avail. That chart would give annual productions.
