Carbon exposed to boiling water long enough with turn to a greyish dust to wipe off or they have piston varnish coke cleaners to soak in then wipe off w/o harm to the metal.

I just did a quick Google search and all I could find was stuff to spray into the carburetor throats. Any particular brand? I thought I'd heard of some Yamaha branded stuff once before.

To get the carbon off pistons and ports, I use paint stripper. The kind you get in hardware stores. In the UK it's called Nitromors. You can also get aerosol cans of "Gasket remover" It's pretty much the same stuff.
I'd give that a go.

Actually the best thing is Dr. Willard's Water Triple X catalysis activator which he developed to clean locomotive diesel pistons but work great on burns and sick animals and plants too. Dr. Willard is being cryptic in his descriptions but knowing folks know its actually a homeopathic remedy working on the carbon bonds.
