I swapped my 900SS rubber band Ducati for Trumph Thruxton which left yesterday trailered away by its new owner...oddly don't miss either..now just waiting on my Lansdowne kit.....and put the Ikons on.....maybe upgrade the brake m/c.....DT head steady would be nice.....and a tri spark ignition...and other enhancements that make it even more fun to ride.

Here in NZ we don't have much motorway and for me its all about fast and smooth on corners....

This really resonates with me - I sold an 851 to buy the MkIIa, and haven't missed it at all (but I still have the bevels, which are a different thing altogether  ).
I put all the above mods on mine - and a belt drive - and I eventually put a Lockheed racing caliper on with a bigger disc.
I'm planning some long trips on it this year, and will be fitting rearsets and flatter bars - it's the best Brit I've ever had by a country mile; no amount of upgrading would get my T140 this good - it's been mothballed since the day I got the Commando roadworthy!

I'm now working on a Production racer with a moderately tuned 750 motor to see if they can be made to compete with the bevel SS - I suspect it may just do that

For me the bottom line is an upgraded Commando is still 100% practical, and always attracts more attention than most other bikes out there.

In the race series I run in here in NZ there is one 750SS green frame imola.....its pretty much untouchable...saying that he rides hard and I've seen it crash twice this year.....the Commandos are next fastest along with the Guzzi Lemans.....me and the BMW are further back.
Saying that I'm up on points due to lots of Brit bikes DNFing.... :D
Commando racer sounds interesting....pics?

Can a knowledgeable member start a thread with a 'menu' listing advisable modifications -in series of intensity re performance/reliability & price, availability, & reputable vendors?
I have always loved the premordial thump of the Norton twin , & that lithe lined style of the Commando, I wanna do it, even the fickle capricious mistress aspects of "ownership" that eyes wide open are part & parcell of the deal..

That would be good!

As these , like most other things , were built ' down to a cost ' , with a little extra dosh , some impovements in ' efficiency ' are accessable .

This means the prime penny pinching areas are the first to recieve attention .Carefull inspection for fit & finish . Clean polish check clearances etc.

or ' Blueprint ' . Principally IGNITION . CARBS . ISOS . Valve Springs , colllars / keepers / cotters & clearances likewise .

And a ' certain bearing ' , somewhere . Ordinarily in certain critical components , the best is satisfactory .And not neccesarilly the least expensive .

We wont mention those horrible carbs and metalury issues other than who else has seen NYLON slides for the notorious Concentrics ?

One can understand why a 48 Manx cost more than a 48 16 H . Attention to detail and quality of fit / componentry . Horses for Courses . the more the . . Er . .

Matt, Even today all Motor cycle parts are made to a "affordable quaility" Eg. Stanchions, they could be proper hard chrome instead of .001 [one thou thick] my local chromer grinds of 6 thou and hard chrome's and grinds and polish's ..OK it's £60 per side =£120 compaired to £53 for Chinese /indian repro.
My Lansdowne Dampers are built to a price, that gives "Better" results, [Race track feedback ], but do not cost the £800 Maxton charges ..As all ready stated the Amal "monkey "metal could be Brass like the old carb's where, or a die cast alloy like the Amal GP or TT but again cost.

I would like to see a good fuel injection system, developed for the commando, doing away with the old amals, mayby the new Commado's system is the answer? Some re-programing will be required.

Great to hear someone is still thrashing a greenframe - I saw an Aussie show on Youtube where the presenter was showing the audience around an immaculate greenframe, stating 'this is too valuable to actually start the engine... '

BMWs are featuring quite heavily in BEARS in the UK this year, and seem to be very competitive.

The Proddie Racer is starting to come together, but verrrrrry slooowly - I'll start a thread once i've made a bit more progress. I'm aiming for reliability above outright performance - John's dampers should keep it all under control though;)
