Hi all,
i have just joined and have a problam on how to re-register this bike (uk). it hasnt been registered since the 70s and was in a bad way no v5. i have the frame number but the engine has been removed and stamped over with ( DRESDA SPECIAL 650 ) the engine is a 650 triunph pre unit in race spec. i would like it to be a dresda but i dont think it is up to it (looks like a homer) so any thoughts.

how do you post a photo?
many thanks Steve.UK

photo posting info is the #2 sticky thread in the main Commando section.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Is this link any use to you? https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration ... d-vehicles I built a Triton and got it registered as a Triton, going back nearly 40 years now! If I remember a traffic police bobby came round to inspect it then I could proceed with the registration. Pretty straightforward in them days :D but now you have to think about type approval and all that bollocks

The comics normally state that a PHOTO of the thing from Aeons Ago will get you the Original number for the number plate .

ANY info you have Validateing its History is usefull for establishing its autenticity - rego wise .

HAVE you got a photo bucket thing or whatever . A LINK to that and knaves can purloin them & post here .
otherwise hit ' Img' then youre picture I.D. number .

Clicking on a picture on this site gets you ' propeties ' .
clicking on that gets you ' URL ' Number .
Which you copy & paste , or Ctrl&V simultaeneousl - AFTEr youve hit COPY copieing it .

Dave Dregens is registered with the DOT as a chassis builder, so I suggest you get in touch with him, sadly there appears to be no internet access to him at this moment in time.

Pre Unit's are Superior . :) - Slick Shift Box . Apparently by 61 they left out the slick shift . as intersections & slick shifts didnt mix .

This is definately a Fuel Tank . Maybe someone can I.D. make / model .

You KNOW what happens to people that do that to cooling fins . Dont You . These days they REPAIR THEM .
Nine Studd , wouldnt discount it as a DRESDA Build just yet . Stranger things have happened at sea .

ASCERTAIN the VALVE CLEARANCES - BEFORE you interfear with things . Id ditto cam timeing . And write in Yr Little Book . :!:

Never was keen on the cocktail shakers - though theyre not totally hopeless . Good Bassis for a clean & polish & tune up .
Not necesary to spiff it up like this RGS / Youll be to nervous to give it merry hell on the track , and the moneys better spent on tyres & chains .
Id do the drain & check for scrap metal as Numero Uno
AND the Forks . Check Volume & composition . :? that way you know .
Sometimes these old girls have aeons of experiance built into them , best to proceed cautiously & judiciously , so as not to muck anything up / loose valuable referances & attributes :D .

thanks all for the input and matt for sorting the picks out
I think I have the picks sorted now (a bit long winded) yes the carbs are not going back on I have got a pair of concentrics to go back the gp's will go on e bay some time as I need the funding. Just picked the wheels up from Wheel Wise Cowfold W/Sussex, re-spoked (s/steel) and a new rear rim (alloy) nice job . Engine is all striped out, looks like been re-board and shelled so just a clean up around the bum. the frame blasted and powder coated some parts bead blasted 9 stud head and central plug ready to be sent off to SRM to have the seats re-done and skimmed !! I have posted a photo of one of my other bikes its a 1962 genuine RGS with matching frame and engine numbers and original UK registered plate.

I'd be interested in those Amal GP carbs if you have thoughts of selling them. Wouldn't mind having a crack before they go on ebay.

What bore diameter are the G.P.s ?

1 1/8 or 1 3/16 you arnt likely to replace , So wouldnt part with them . Years of anguish ahead otherwise . :p

Would you tell us the valve head diameters & port diameters . A shot of the chambers would be interesting . :D

If youre replaceing the exhaust , The 1 3/4 pipes can considerably increase the horsepower , rpms , and Noise . :)

Are you intending it for a track bike / raceing , or a tourer . ?

Lastly , Degens wouldve tended to use certain component supplyers , so period pictures would authenticate fittings etc
as to if its to std. Dresda build specs . He is still around and has a computor thing , so might be worth a chat .

p.s. CAM Numbers & profiles . A pic of the lobes of each mightnt go amiss  Some have CAST ' blank ' numbers ,
AND Stamped ' GRIND ' numbers . Those look like maybe late ( late 60s being late ) genuine wide duration suckers .
Imperitive to keep lifters in original orientation . Are any cross drilled or grovved on sides - where the head fits in the Tappet Blocks ?

p.s.s.  Whats the DATE stamping on the Magneto Tag . presumeing its K2F , rather than K2FC . later alledgedly sparks
better at Start Up , rather than neccesarrilly better at high rpm's . but pre 1956 Mag can tear the drive shaft out of the armature .

Youd need the fancy offset ' works ' viscosity stacks , to get the Concentrics to approach the G.P.s , Cant you put the Car , Telly or kitchen table
on Ebay instead .

p.s.s.s. , :) just checked , the G.P.s on the 72 F750 Norton are 1 7/32 " , so if theyre that size , youve got a good starting point .

thanks again for all the help
I have put some more picks on.
I am not a track man so this will go on the road although someone maybe one day will race it. I am a BSA man and not long re-built my rgs that also came in as a basket case although I have built these up before but not with this speck, the only reason I am selling the carbs is for funding I have got concentric s to replace them and stacks but am now thinking twice about it as I would like to keep them on. Once there gone there gone !! this has cost me so far just under £1000 and I have only just started. I might have to sell one of my other bikes (but not yet) I have a very understanding wife who has no interest in bikes so I don't use family money that keeps indoors happy (I am sure you all understand.)
The cam numbres are, in.e3134 ex.1-2887 and the mag plate is missing so i dot know what year it is.
Dave Degens lives only 20 miles from me so I will get in touch some time.

Very fortunate that you live so close to Degens; should be easy enough to verify the authenticity of the bike, or at least some of the parts.

If you live close to Degans, go and see him, and take the bike.

He is still in business and is a one-stop-Triton-shop for sure! So don't go sending your engine bits all over the place just yet, GO AND SEE DAVE!!

Now the bad news, looking at your pics, the reasets, mudguard, engine plates, etc all like Unity Equipe stuff to me. Certainly doesn't look like Dresda stuff. Ditto the big finned ex clamps too.

So, I do think it is a 'homer'.

But there's nowt stopping you making it into a proper, full blown, Dresda (apart from a few quid)!

:D

Looks like the Spitfire Grind . Massive clearance between valves -no doubt to suit the central plugs - so unlikely to ever tangle .
The Intake ports are as big as youd want , looks like someone knew what they were up to .

looks like its .040 over , which is good . Youd pick up one or two horsepower with new seats , but unnessesary unless your raceing .
Would be a bit awkward - with the central plugs . So would get them in a arm lock & verify it was no trouble before fitting .

Theres some alloy ( A.R.E. ? ) 750 barrels about . Was offered one here with a repaired fin for $ 50 , cant recall if it had sleeves .
For a road bike thisd be the go if you insist on spending loot . At least keep a eye out for one . more tourque and LIGHTER .

Thanks very much for posting those pictures , saves a awfull lot of ' Was That ' etc . :D
