A Norton minds better when it knows you have tools handy is all I've got to say on this matter. Like a bad boy seeing a belt. They know.
 
I carry a cloth tool roll in my sidecover. It's got the obvious tools in it that have been mentioned. Plug socket, flat head, mini visegrip, hooked dental pick. I carry a chain master link, a few extra blade fuses, and extra clutch cable.

I wonder if anyone has any interesting suggestions on other tools or spare parts to carry. I have both sidecovers on dzeus fasteners so they are easily removed and one of them is vacant. So fire away...

The stock tool kit has worked well for me except that the stock plastic tool roll only lasted about 35 years. I got a cloth roll up one on eBay that is much nicer but the maker no longer does tool rolls.
The sidecover has never fallen off. It helps to look at the dzus fastener while fiddling with it to make sure it is engaging the spring. If nervous about it falling off then maybe use a bread bag twisty tie around the upper arm of the sidecover as insurance.
 
dug around and found a nice saddleman too that sany clause brought me last year has pliers screwdrivers knive blade...added a small vice grips, a couple of zip ties, foot or so of electrical tape, a couple of fuses, spark plug and socket then wrapped it up in shop rag it fit in side cover perfectly to ease my paranoia of dzus I put a zip tie around frame tube and side cover 'arm' that attached to dzus...I can take seat off and reach in and extract tool kit without removing side cover

Yup , mine been zip tied for years after nice lady thought best thing to do was straddle it with her car while I was trying to retrieve , ruined a perfectly good paint job , from bouncing down road ....
 
I put both my side covers on Dzeus clips. I didn't like the weak looking circlip that held the barrel of the fastener in place, so I bought the heavy duty ones from Mcmaster-carr, which make sure that the clip isn't going to let go.... A side by side comparison of circlips pictured below.

I don't trust the dzus on my 850 Mk1 either, but just use a re-usable zip tie on the sidepanel "arm" as insurance. I've also just got (but not yet used) one of the Mk2 plastic underseat tool trays from Andover Norton to augment the tool space, so I can put some of the lighter items in the sidepanel one, and heavier items under the seat. OK, space is limited under the seat, and you have to rearrange the rectifier to allow the tray to fit, but you get the idea?

Would you mind posting a photo of the tray as it sits on your bike?
I have seen that before on AN but have been curious how it fits

Strapped a small tool bag back of the seat grab bar for long time. Only used the flat screw driver to adjust the carbs. Took it off. Still carry a spark plug, fuses, tie wraps, carb hex wench etc in the side cover. Don't want to attempt fate but there is always CAA Bike Rescue.
 
Now a days (now a days is the way I avoid saying " at my age ....."), the only "tools" I carry to deal with roadside contingencies are cell phone, credit cards and AAA card.

Thanks for posting lazyeye6, the tool roll looks like it was made for it. The picture also tells me something I’ve been pondering for a while. I have a silver interstate. I purchased a new roadster tank and side panels and to save grief I was thinking of painting them silver to match what the registration docs say, but I’d never seen a silver roadster. Now I have and it looks great! Decision made.
