something i found is the metal splitter from RGM is .aprox. .300 longer the an original plastic one i have which will give you issues with the cables. the ones I have from RGM measures aprox. 2.870 overall. looks like I need to find another source.

@olympus they are from Amal

http://amalcarb.co.uk/air-filters/threaded-cone-filter-900-series-mk1.html

You need to make a flat on one of them (I used a Dremel), as the carbs on the Commando are so close together

We have taken them off now, and gone over to a pre-MK3 style filter (purely for it’s looks)

When I read on the Amal site the conical filters wouldn't fit as the 900 carbs are too close together, I was hoping someone would modify them, so I'm really pleased that you have. And they look the business
Many thanks

Not sure how you can make a flat in these as they are spin on types?

As an aside, the oval XS copy of the K&N (and I assume the K&N) flow better than the conical.

So JS sent air filters for testing. Here is the test setup. 34mm

Here are the air filters I tested at JS request. All were tested dry except the K&N"s which were pre oiled.

#2 dry unifilter - full length--------------------------------------------181.9 CFM
#3 Taiwan K&N copy -dry #150154-----------------------------------181.2 CFM
#4 Emgo K&N copy - dry #150035-------------------------------------178.3 CFM
#5 XS K&N copy -dry----------------------------------------------------195.2 CFM
#6 K&N dual filter -one side taped up-oiled------------------------163.7 CFM
#7 same as above with no tape---------------------------------------195.2 CFM
#8 stock paper filter -non baffled backplate------------------------204.5 CFM

@gortnipper yes, indeed they are screw on filters.

  • We screwed the left one on, and marked on the filter the inner piece of the housing that needed to be removed.
  • Unscrewed the filter, and took the dremel to it.
  • Reattached to the carb, then the right side filter could be spun straight on with no mods needed.
  • Note, you can't take the left filter off until you've removed the right one first - as it is kinda interlocked on there.

Easy to do, and worked out great!

We fitted them temporarily, as we had removed the black box on the MK3.
Wanted to put a ham can filter on there all along, but held off initially, as we were not too sure how much space we had to play with.
We had also fitted the older style battery tray, and one of Jim's sump plug reed valves at the same time, so was unsure where the breather tube would be routed and what clearances were like with starter motor etc...

Swapped to the ham can purely for aesthetics - no change to the way the bike goes just to the way it looks.

Great write up & explanation, the K&n may have a better air flow, but doesn't look nowhere as nice being held on with hose clips

I ordered a Venhil cable kit yesterday and shall make my own throttle cables - with properly splayed inner strands. I can see the Venhil kits with one end already made up but I shall cut them off and remake them I think based on past experience.
