The 650 Norton thread

I can remember when the first Super Rocket BSAs came to Melbourne. I went to a Hartwell Club sprint at Berwick. Erny Pointer ran just under 13 seconds for the quarter mile. The Super Rocket was the first BSA twin to have twin carbs as standard. I am not bloody deluded - back in those days I knew what was going to blow me to the weeds.

A Commando with a single Mikuni would probably be faster than one with twin Amals, simply because of the range of needles and needle jets which are available for Mikunis.

This is not borne out in practice. Nobody puts a single carb on their Commando to go faster. I would think that the larger selection of tuning options increases the likelihood that it's mistuned for most people.

If you want to talk BSAs, Commandos or Mikunis, this is not the thread for that.
Many of the last 10 posts should be deleted, including this one. This thread should remain to be about the 650 Nortons. Let's try not to mess it up.

When the 650ss Nortons were available most of us could not afford them. So the motorcycle shops in Australia did not usually sell many of them. I have only ever had four mates who had a Norton tein. THe best of them was the Manxman. One of my mates rode a Dominator 88 from Brisbane to Melbourne in 20 hours in the rain. When he got home, he fell into bed and slerpt for 3 days. If he had been riding a Triumph, hev would probably still be on the road somewhere.
When I look at those photos which have been posted, I remember just how good those Nortons were. They did not usually leak oil, and they performed well.
