Sadly, it was misidentified by me by not looking closely enough. The tacho drive I removed, thoroughly cleaned and then packed with grease - an easy job and it benefitted from the extra lube - and I then replaced it all again.
No, the actual issue is either oil coming via the exhaust valve guide into the exhaust and exiting at the exhaust stub to ex. pipe where there’s a slight leak, or it is bypassing the rings. The engine is very low mileage but has had no use at all for many years, could be 20, 25, 30?
So for now, as I have no intention on stripping the engine as I have far too much else to worry about, I have once more drained the oil and refilled it with Morris Running in oil as I’ve said above.
I’ve only done a brief trip so far as I used my Commando for the local bike night, and I will give it a bit more of a run and see if it can simply be stuck rings. I might get lucky, who can tell?
