Rode to my ex dealership to inquire if they may have remapped the bike with map 77 again instead of 90 or 91. The bike has similar symptoms. Idling at 2K, surges, same vibe at 3700. They've done that twice before so.....Made an appt. for week after next after vacation. You know, of course they couldn't just give me an answer.

Rode another 40+ miles to the beach, hung out with some biker acquaintances and left. Bike just shut down after about a mile. Luckily, same bikers stopped to help. Called for a tow. 360 bucks. Biker buddy rode home, got his van, saved the day.

So....while stuck, trying to start, the bike cranked fine but sounded like now fuel. Also, I wasn't hearing the fuel pump prime when I turn the key on. About a dozen times. Thinking a fuse or fuel pump. However, get in the garage, now I do hear the pump prime. Cranks, don't start, smell fuel.

Any thoughts? Nothing I can do now, really. Leaving for Fla. tomorrow. Maybe I have an hour or two to devote to investigating. Maybe one of the non Bosch sensors? I do have a set still in the box. I'm betting it may be something simple but my mechanical skills suck, so if one of you could at least point me in the right direction, much appreciated.
Sorry for the long winded frustrated post.

Thanks for letting me share. Oy.

Tip over sensor will shut down the pump. Happened to me , it was the connector breaking. Look at it , under the seat by the fuse box. You may be able to cheat it as well with a jumper . This cost me a trip to the dealer also, just sharing. Also your bike is home and you're going to Florida . Its not so bad.

Thanks Tony. Its a start, no pun intended. What about anything to do with the kickstand or clutch lever. Aren't those just plunger type switches that could disable me too? Besides, couldn't ask for a prettier place to get stuck as the sun was setting. :/

I have a prettier place. My vintage Harley blew the 11 year old primary drive belt..... in my driveway! You gotta love a bike like that!

Yes , Side stand switch feeds the tip over sensor then to the fuel pump relay . The clutch lever switch will stop the starter from cranking. I don't think that is your problem. You said the starter cranks the engine but will not start. If you don't pull in the clutch lever , the starter will not spin. Try it. You can also jumper the side stand switch.

BPHORSEGUY. Yea. Gotta love a bike that tells you not to go out that day, regardless of the view. Thanks Richard and Tony. I'm suspecting side stand switch. I pulled over today, I think I started to move with the stand not full up. Bike lurched and stalled. Just one of those boneheaded moves. Started right back and off I went. I have a couple of hours to putt around before my flight. I'll give them a quick try.

Could as well be a damaged head temp sensor (behind cylinders), had similar symptoms with this. Try to gently turn the sensor, if it moves it might be damaged!

That was fine, but thanks. iwilson suggested loose relays. He was right. All four were a little loose. Pushed them in and bike started right up. Thanks for the tips though Richard and Tony. Which is the tilt sensor, by the way? The black box loosely slid onto to that flat bar/bracket? GOt to trace the kickstand wire and all its connections, so now I know where that stuff is. You all saved my lame ass to the dealership. PLUS...I get to go to Florida and lay on the beach without fretting over my beloved Norton.

Are these the relays inside the Gray Fuse box ? There should be a piece of dense foam pushing on the relays from the inside of the fuse box cover. This pressure from the foam should keep the relays in place. Also use a zip tie to hold the cover on and the plugs in the back together snugly . If you don't have this foam then you should install it. Yes slid on the bar bracket is the tip over sensor. Just in front of the fuse box under back of the seat.

Here is a pic of the new style tilt switch:

I will check to find one of the old version as well...

Tony. It was the 4 black relays in front of the grey fuse box and no. There was nothing securing them. Its not my first time under there, but I didn't think the would vibrate out. I did put zip ties on them. I'll get some foam or maybe even a big car was sponge and stick it in there. Can't believe they stayed for 8300 miles. I'm a happy camper either way. That tilt sensor is loose as all get out. I'll secure that as well.

Hmmm......nothing like the old one. I'd take photos but I buttoned it up. Gotta catch the train to the plane.

I believe it was a Euro 3 requirement. If bad things happen and the rider is incapacitated the bike will shut itself off!

Can it be removed or bypassed?

I’ve not had one of these before, and I’ve been riding (legally) for over 42 years now, so don’t feel the value in having one now. Just seems like another potential failure mode to me.

Can I hack it out??
