Stuck on layshaft roller bearing

Getting the inner race to a blue colour probably is excessive and will soften the steel and likely shorten the service life of the bearing. I would not use this inner race!
I agree. too much heat. Put the bearing in boiling water max.
Tom

Did you use a heat gun as suggested or a torch ? If torched to the inner race to blue then the 2 pieces of the bearing must be replaced.

I used a heat gun but I must have had it on there too long. I’ve already ordered a replacement bearing so I’ll swap out the inner race when that comes in. In the mean time there are lots of other things I can work on.

"Always keep the inner and the outer together as a pair".
Quoted by Mick Hemmings.
Don't invite Murphy in the room. YMMV
Cheers,

So if I’m going to take this inner race off the layshaft, what’s the best method? Heat the whole thing up and pull with locking pliers? Put it in the freezer then pull? Don’t want to damage anything on the shaft itself.

C.K.
You should be able to drift the inner race out with an aluminum 1/2 " drift and the race held fast in a bench vice using soft jaws. the fit for the shaft and the race should be a loose press fit. It should come out the same way. Don't use vice grips or channel-lock pliers.
I am trying to guess what type of bench tools you have available. Have you got any bearing pullers?
Cheers,
Thomas

No bearing pullers but I could probably pick one up. I’m willing to get the tools if they aren’t too expensive. I’ll try the drift first

Don’t forget places like auto-zone will lend out tools with a deposit. I’m sure bearing pullers are available from them.

Or if you have decided that piece is a complete loss: take a dremel or hacksaw to it, cutting on a diagonal ALMOST through to the shaft, then a cold chisel (not directed toward the shaft) to break it open and peel it off.

Yes if it is really stuck on the shaft then I've used a dremel cutter wheel to cut down close to the shaft , take that cold chisel to behind the bearing inner face. Heat it up too but no heat to shaft beforehand with the brutality.

I was able to use a bearing splitter and got the inner race off. Got a new bearing and swapped it out. Now on to the full reassembly!

I ain't looked in here till now about fed up, as pretty straight forward simpleton hangup but such long lasting thread looked in to say WFT just destroy the sucker by brutal means cutting tocrhing or splitting to see an off factory manual non prim proper satisfaction obtained w/o my encouragement, ahhh. Now just put gb together w/o any gaskets to avoid the shaft shimmy shim game. One place loctite actually does its job on Commando - is on the main shaft nut. Don't screw up on spacer facing.

o_O

Not quite sure I understand your whole response, but the reassembly is going well.
