SPROCKET TALK

I have another idea that may interest . If you reduce the front to 17 T and the rear to 47 T you would have virtually the same gearing. The smaller rear sprocket would provide the more chain clearance and the 17 t front would bring you back to stock gearing (nearly). Stock = 18/50 = 2.778 to 1 and New 17/47 = 2.765 to 1 (almost the same ) !! (Hey , I like this Idea) I've been looking at the Talon website , and 961 rear sprockets in various sizes are a plenty... It would also be noteworthy if you could find out if they will make the Newer style 961 spline as well OR do we need to go to Norton ? Do you live in England , where Talon is by chance ?

Here is the answer you may be looking for from the first page>>>>>

there is only a minor difference in inspection criterion between the ones you received, and the ones that seem to fit the 2014 and later. As I understand it from Dave Coote (Richard's father) Norton is selling the newer sprocket to fit on the older bikes. This will make the fit a little "loose", but this should not be a problem

We use the same spline on some of the industrial tools we make. With same spine (tooth thickness) and about 2/3 less teeth, this spline accepts 3200 ft/lbs (4338 Newton meters) So this spline should never fail even when it is a loose fit to the countershaft

Hopefully they will fit your 2012 bike.

We are recutting the rest of the units for fit to the newer bikes. I will send a set to Richard to see how the fit is on his 2013

We will branding these sprockets with the One O7 name and selling them through CNW.

More stuff to come, but it is still a secret.

John

New countershaft sprockets went out to Matt @ CNW today. 17 and 19 tooth

Should be about $130 to $140 each, but Matt will set final price

Hello John Great news . I would like to order a 17t in the near future .

Just a heads up. We made 20 each of the sprockets (20 each 17 tooth, and 20 each 19 tooth) We used one set for the race bike, one set for testing to Richard, and one set to Raphi in Switzerland. 4 sets were damaged when we recut the splines. So only 13 of each sprocket are being sent to Matt at CNW.

I will only make more if Matt gets back orders. So if you want a set, get a hold of Matt and order yours soon

The sprockets have been tested on three different bikes (Richard's, Raphi's, and tested hard on the race bike) There is a one year warranty on the sprockets. They are made of 4340 chrome moly steel, and heat treated to 54 Rockwell C. If you have any problems, you can reach me here on the site, or Matt and Richard have contact info

John

Normally I would jump on something like this. But I have yet to get used to the stock sprocket. I'm sure it would improve things, but I can wait til it's back ordered.

Hey,

Just wanted to say thanks to those that ordered the sprockets right away.

John, Richard and myself certainly appreciate it. It takes a lot of work to turn something from an idea into a product available for sale and it comes full circle when these parts are being bought and used as intended

Richard and John put a ton of effort into the 961 stuff and we are really fortunate to have these passionate guys on our side

Thanks

Sprocket arrived today, very impressed with quality.
A quick read of Richards sprocket manual and 20 minutes later i was riding out the driveway.

Just a quick 5 minute squirt up the road, roundabouts and corners.
Definitely feels more alive accelerating out of corners,

Going to check GPS speedo for speed but doesn't feel to much different.
Going for a run in the weekend, should finish the dunlop off, time for a new rear tyre!!!

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,

Good to hear.
Have my one lined up.

Did you use original lock washer? Easy to not damage?

Looking forward to my wheelie monster. Yeah I know...

Yes used the same washer, it came off in good condition.
You only have to bend the 2 tabs that hold the nut.
The other 2 tabs slot straight into the locating holes on new sprocket,
If you note where the tabs are when you remove the old sprocket, and install the new sprocket in same position ,the nut will line up perfect with the tabs.

cheers
Paul

Hello all

Anybody has experience with the one tooth up which means 19T front sprocket?
I noticed that the 17T sprocket eats a bit of aluminium from a disk, which is not really a problem compared to the additional fun with a bit more torque... I am just wondering if with the 19T the chain clearance to silencer may be a problem.
Raphi, Switzerland

Hello Raphi , No I have not. But I wonder if you can tell us more about where the aluminum disc is that is eating away ? Is it near the swing arm pivot ? Maybe post a photo ? Thanks.

Hi, I will. But you have to wait a while. I haven't my bike here...

Lets get back to rear sprockets for a moment please. Mines got some good wear on it. Its marked Talon TR351. 50 tooth 525 pitch. Any suggestions where I can get that state side or a high quality comparable sprocket that will fit? I've been on a website in England asking for bike or rim specific and neither Norton nor Morad comes up. Any suggestions or am I still slave to the factory? No offense, Norton.

Hi , Britfan , I may have ordered from the same place as you were lookin. HPS ? in England . They are a Talon dealer . I am still waiting for my sprocket from them. I am ordering a different size though. Not 50 T , instead 48 T. Based on my measurements it looks like it should fit. Problem is though the 50 T size has to be special ordered. Anything above 47T in fact . 76 mm center hole , 100 mm bolt circle and 5 Holes - 10.5 mm dia.. Have you priced them from Norton yet ? The price may not be too bad . While you are at it get a price on an 18 T front while you're asking and let us know. Even with shipping the England Talon was cheaper then a source I found here (Sprocket Center) and you will have the same issue with size not stocked. They don't even list a sprocket over 47T , at least the England Source lists it and will order. Thanks.
