So, the dealership found my vent kit and is willing to install it. Spoke to Matt Capri, a gentleman, knowledgeable and patient, seemed willing to assist if my dealership doesn't get it right. Also, concerning the leaking starter, informed me that most of us misdiagnose the symptom by thinking its the starter gasket. According to Mr. Capri, in most cases, its the starter itself. An O ring inside. The vent kit may help it. Either way, Mr. Capri is God send to the U.S. Norton Market and we should all be pleased to have him as the US Distributor. Kuzaa!! Kuzaa!! Kuzaa!!

Hello Contours , Did you get your 961 yet ?

Nope. My transporter can't fit me in until the end of May. I also need to call Bob at MCC to ask him whether or not my bike exhibited signs of "oil-in-the-airbox" and see if they can address it, if necessary.

I am a patient man.

What color is your bike , maybe I've seen it when I was there. I will be going back in the next few weeks , so maybe I will have a look.

That's not fair! Just kidding - that would be cool, Tony.

This is she. Except now she has CF wheels, chain guard and rear tire hugger.

Let me know if you see her in the showroom.

Peter

I am definitely looking forward to the delivery. Unlike my Daytona 955i, she's going to be pampered. This is the first new bike I've owned since 1987 (before that it was 1973). From everything I've read on this forum I believe it's going to be a end-of-lifetime of servitude to this beautiful lady.

Tranny vent installed. Picked up the bike, there was a small puddle of oil on the crankcase. Cleaned it. Took the bike out for a thrashing, which the dealership won't do. 66 miles miles averaging 75 to 80 mph, clipping 105 a few times. Bone dry. No leaks. Also, checked the oil. The dealership overfilled it by about 1/4" over the top mark. Boneheads. Looking forward to a good season and lots of miles added.

Hello Britfan , Keep us posted with your results. , Thanks Tony

Good to hear. My dad struggled for a very long time trying to diagnose the starter leak. It would really only happen on long rides so it took some time to figure it out. He played with different gaskets, shortened the bolts thinking they we bottoming out on the threads. He though perhaps it was on bumpy roads or on long right hand leans and the oil would get up that high. He got to the point where the Starter gasket was so tight that oil started coming out other seals and that when he finally figured out the Transmission was not vented and building pressure. So obvious yet didn't think of it as all transmissions are usually vented so it can't be that. Any how, it's so nice to hear you finally have the bike back.

I don't think mechanics suspect tranny pressure as the underlying cause for the problem on the 961 due to the fact that most modern engines are wet sump units. Where the crankcase breather vents the entire case internals, and there is no separate gearbox cavity to build up pressure. Maintenance folks on these bikes need to understand this. It's great to have a solution to the problem though. I haven't had this issue on my CR but I will be buying the tranny vent as insurance.

Richard. What surprises me, is, when I picked up the bike, before the vent was installed, they rode it for 20 miles then called me and said it did not leak. They installed the vent. When I went to pick the bike up, there was a puddle on the crankcase. We cleaned it up. After my 60 mile aggressive ride, there was no oil to be found. Like I said, they did overfill the engine oil. Also, Matt Capri said the starter leaks from an O ring inside, not the gasket itself. As we heard, Nortons starter vendor did at on time send them a bad batch. I've been checking to see if it leaks while standing. So far, so good. Best news is, the bikes running great and I had a blast. That's what its all about, no?
