I had my gearbox apart before Christmas, looking for source of odd noises etc and the RGM ground shaft is perfect, no wear at all and that's with maybe 18,000 miles on it but most of my riding is done at speed in top gear. I wonder how much it does turn in the lower gears and presumably it rotates a little in top. I guess the heavy loads of kick starting give it the hardest treatment ?

Doesn't turn at all in top gear. The mainshaft is locked directly to the sleeve gear in top gear, so they both turn at the same speed.

I do know that :) but I meant that with the mainshaft locked up to the sleeve gear the layshaft is rotating as 4th layshaft gear is splined to the shaft so it must be turning in the K/S bush bearing since it is being driven by the sleeve gear with which it's in full time mesh. Having thought about it my comment about how much it turns in top WAS stupid...it turns all the time, the layshaft that is........or have I still got it wrong?

I think perhaps there has been a misunderstanding? It now seems clear you were referring to the layshaft but, as this discussion is concerned with the sleeve gear I think Icrken assumed you meant the sleeve gear.
