Sir Eddy's Rocket

Things are looking pretty promising. Jim Comstock has had to fix many issues on the motor, he has put his heart and soul into making sure it is right. He has had to reengineer the valve train and have a few parts overnighted to make this come together. Looking forward to firing it off this weekend and see what she has in her.

Today is Sir Eddy's birthday born August 10th 1936. He is smiling from above saying go get'em boys!

Happy Birthday Pops and Thank you Jim!

Looking good Paul. Salt is a little iffy this year, but so far the event is still on. If they don't get any more rain between now and the 29th, we might actually have a good course. That would be nice for all of us, but particularly for you, after all the effort you've put into this.

Yes sir Ken,
Good news on the coarse three days after the down pour...

The buckeye Bullet team are in Wendover and they use the international course for jogging in the morning. They report a dry track with no standing water on the course. Weather today is hot and sunny. We will be there Thursday to final prep the track and the Bullet is scheduled to roll Monday morning.

To all involved, good luck on the salt this year from passionate Norton owners and enthusiasts in New Zealand.
As a Commando owner now, I started off in the 70's on 500 Nortons in wideline featherbed frames, so 500's are still close to my heart
Good luck
Regards Mike

It looks to be a fun time out there on the salt, here's hoping the weather holds and best of luck to ya !!

Wow how time flies. Last post was August 11th 2015 and what a bummer that we were not able to make it to the Salt Last year.
Things happen for a reason. I made it out to Jim's last week to finish up tuning on Sir Eddy's Rocket and once again had the time of my life working towards the goal of getting the bike to Bonneville. Attached is a video of our final couple of days on the dyno searching for horses as Jim would say...

Thank you Jim!

Very impressive, Paul. That much horsepower should certainly give you a good shot at getting in the record books. Now all we need is a venue to run at. I don't know if you've seen the latest from SCTA president, Bill Lattin, so I'm posting the text from his letter here

"With the water finally drying up at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Myself and a group of SCTA members were planning a trip up to Bonneville this weekend to assess the conditions and possibly start wheel packing and grooming courses. I placed a courtesy call to Roxanne Tea with the BLM today to inform her of our plans. Roxanne informed me that as a result of ongoing negative comments, letters and other media generated primarily by Dennis Sullivan, President of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). The BLM will not allow any racing organizations on the Salt at this time and are in fact holding discussions of cancelling all racing for the 2016 season.

As of the writing of this letter I have tried unsuccessfully to contact Dennis Sullivan. I have spoken with Stuart Gosswein with SEMA and Save the Salt Foundation. Stuart and I will continue to hold discussions with Roxanne in an effort to move forward with a resolution. I will keep the membership informed as the discussions unfold."

I'm hoping this is just a temper tantrum by BLM, and gets sorted out in time for us to have an event this year. If not, you might want to think about running at El Mirage.

Ken

Hmmm, Let's hope they don't make it political and move forward with racing. If not El Mirage here we come....

What was the expected HP in the notes your dad left? I know he told me what he was expecting, but I don't remember.

69HP and 35 FT # Torque @ 10,500 on paper. Keep in mind we are running at 5000ft. level. I am very happy with the results.

Ken, A couple of prayers and what do you know...

Message from the SCTA President / Race Director

We have some great news to report! With assistance from Stuart Gosswein and Russ Deane with SEMA and Save the Salt Foundation we were able to negotiate with the BLM regarding our pre-trip plans. The BLM sent representatives out to the salt Friday June 3rd. The BLM reported the salt to be quite thin in some areas and reported improvements in miles 5 and 7. At this point we have permission to go out and assess the conditions however, it may be a week or two before we can wheel pack or drag. I have expressed my concerns about wheel packing the areas of our long course from the 2 mile to the 3 1/2 where the silt came down from the mountains during the heavy rains. This will be necessary ASAP before the surface gets hard in order to have a smooth course through that area.

In closing I would like to thank Stuart Gosswein, Russ Deane and everyone inolved at the BLM for working together and coming to a resolution on this issue. I will keep the membership updated as the plans come together and more information becomes available.

Unfortunately there were a couple unforeseen problems that made a dent in the horsepower calculations.

First was the cam that was used in the calcs was a high lift lobe with very aggressive ramps that would have been useful in an overhead cam engine, but was mechanically impossible to use in a pushrod motor.
We had to use a cam with more duration and considerably less lift to make it possible to run at the expected RPM.

Second was the narrow bathtub combustion chamber with a dome filling piston head that hampered the breathing potential.

Considering that we had to work around those limits, I think 51 actual brake horsepower was a pretty good result.

Crossing my fingers and hoping to be able to run at Bonneville were we should be able to reach record speed with that much power. Jim

Ten-three???? WOW, now that in and of itself is really something!! You guys are amazing. Hopefully the weather is in ya'lls favor this time around. Best of luck to ya

Here is a section of recorded dyno runs from 2 days of annoying the neighbors. Basically unedited except where U-tube removed some audio because of the music rights. I think we did around 32 pulls.

Over the two days we experimented with cam timing, ignition timing, exhaust system lengths and diameters, jetting and air filters and different types of spark plug.

Man, I wish my neighbors were half as annoying as you!
