Rocker spring washer - not enough room?

I actually managed to du it roughly that way, didn´t think it was possible, but it was. Have you done it recently, and come across these really wide springs that I bought from Andover? I can´t be the only one who has bought them and find them much tougher than the original ones..... I think the rockers are too tight now, I need to put pretty much force on them to make them move. Before fitting them they move freely and easy on the shaft so it all depends on the spring, the way I see it.
Maybe just refit your original Thackeray washers?

Yeah, Fast Eddie already suggested that and I really have to consider that. I don´t like it because everything else is new, but.....

I've replaced my Thackerays last year after having valve work done. New did not seem tough to fit and I do recall them being more expanded than originals. The rockers can move along the spindles slightly without much force and rotate freely. Any chance something else is wrong, like originally left side spindle now on the right side and you've got some wear in differences? Got the spindles correctly rotated with the flats facing toward outside of head?

Write to technical@andover-norton.co.uk if you think they are wrong, but be sure you explain. They will investigate and get back to you. Their suppliers sometimes supply wrong and they don't always catch it. They normally get back to you quickly. They do look heavier than original but it's hard to tell from pictures. Hopefully you have the thrust washer on the other side - without it they don't move easily and will eat into the head.

I've installed many but not new ones from Andover as I have originals from bad heads so I have not bought new.

I haven't tried with these rockers and springs , but on other situations, a piece of thin plate or wide feeler gauge can help you slide spring into position , on the awkward side and just push it into the gap. Cheers

The ones I got are, as you can see on a pic in an answer above, about twice the width compared to the old ones. And they are much stiffer to compress. Everything else is as it should be, no rockers in the wrong place etc.

Yeah, think I´ll do just that. Maybe it´s because as Eddie says, it´s not an item you normally change that few have come across them? I just thought that since I´m going to do a proper restoration I´ll change every little piece in there....And I suspect that these springs never have been replaced since -73 so it was about time. But maybe unnecessary.....

I´ll pull one rocker/shaft and put one of the old springs in, see what that will do.

Good Job. We are truly blessed to have so many avenues of parts for our relics.
However, you will find that sometimes the original 40 yr old parts are better or at least more serviceable than new.
