Rickman Triumph

I would have styed on drilling for information at the Rickman shop! But, yes, a bit of an imposition on a Sunday...

This will be a great bike!
Adrian Moss can talk and the only reason I was only there for an hour was that he had a lunch date. The Rickman rear sets are nickel plated steel and I don’t really like them, it will be a straightforward job to machine something better with a more appropriate foot peg position for the single seat. I have the original engine plates as a template, I just want to replace them as they have some holes drilled for zip ties that are unnecessary on one side and on the other they are drilled to mount something else.

I’m not in a rush so all is good.

I’ve been busy most weekends but I’m now making some progress. Just need to decide on the frame colour.

The labels are due to the mods to the oil system, when my pal originally built the bike he was concerned about debris in the frame so it’s modified so the pump feeds via an oil filter then feeds the engine via the original oil pressure location hence there are three pipes rather than the original two. And yes it works, engine has over 20,000 miles on it since this was done.

The beige period has passed, especially after a bit of brazing to move the rest loop. The bike started out life as a police Rickman and the rear frame tubes extended further back and they needed shortening to accommodate a single seat base hence the need for a bit of surgery. I may be boring but I’m leaning towards satin black but the dark silver/gunmetal is still niggling away in the back of my mind. I need to make a decision as without the frame I won’t be making much progress.

Silver !

If the frame is hand-painted silver or black, when it cracks it can be bronze welded without repainting the whole frame. I would never electroplate a frame - if it cracks, it becomes a difficult problem.

Why satin ?
I like the look of it and I have lots of parts powder coated in that colour and while I was there I saw a frame done in gloss black and it was too shiny and I didn’t think it would look right. Anyway it will be back in a few weeks and I’ll post some pics. It’s taken a while to get to this point due to some changes that needed making to the rear of the frame, the loop needed moving and the rear tubes shortening due to it being a police spec frame.

When I get it back the first priority is to get it rolling so I’m nit stuck with it on my lift, it’s been a real pain not having the lift free and I now remember what a faff it is working on bikes at ground level.

The frame is 52 years old and is crack free so my hope is that if it’s lasted this long it should be ok.

Some progress has been made. Still a lot to do but progress is progress.

Upsetting to realize it looks very much like my Enfield Rickman in that it is equally apart and not coming back together due to inability to get anyone to get the work done. Yours does look good I must admit.
