Hello Everyone
I’m in the beginning stages of possibly upgrading my front brake setup. Currently my setup is an OE , 13mm resleeved MC with rebuilt OE caliper. Stainless flex line. Lightened style OE rotor. I’m fairly familiar with the available kits. At this point I’d like to stick to a more complete kit rather then piecing things together.
I’ve read that people have used the RGM kit that is currently offered. It includes the AP racing type caliper, adaptor plate, HH brake pads, bigger brake rotor.
It doesn’t include the MC.
questions…
1) does the above kit still use the stock hardline “bundy pipe” that goes from the caliper to the fork bracket, then to the flex line? Or is it a flex line from caliper to MC?
2) will the stock, lower fender brace still work with the upgraded racing caliper?
3) can anyone post pictures of the RGM kit installed on the bike?
Thanks everyone
Shayne

Shayne, a few good pics on this site. Personally I'm not a fan of the RGM adapter with it's slotted caliper mount holes. If I were fitting one I would definitely make some infills so the caliper cannot wander.

The Norvil adapter is better in that respect:

1. I have a braided hose from the caliper to MC, bypassing the junction in the 'triple tree'.
2. On my mk3, the caliper is in front of the LH fork, so doesn't foul the fender / mudguard stay.
3. I'm away for the weekend, but can post pictures after that, if a mk3 set up is useful?
I'm not impressed with the set up. So, if it's an improvement, they must have been pretty poor! :)

I would highly recommend this complete kit from Don Pender (Madass)
It’s a bolt-on unit that works like a dream.Mine has about 10,000 miles on it with no problems whatsoever

I did not buy the kit but I have essentially the same setup pieced together. The slotted caliper mount works just fine. The caliper has not moved nor do I see any reason that it would. Mine is a MK III so no fender brace problem. I bought the caliper mount to use with a stock rotor that I'd already had ground and drilled but later decided to go with a larger disc - the reason it was pieced together. MC is sleeved to 13mm. I bent up a nickle/copper hard line for the short pipe to the caliper. My hoses are just stock (new) and the feel is quite firm. The final result is a much improved front brake.

On one front end I have the basically modded out stock setup described in the opening of this thread. On the other I have the Pender kit. Under normal operating conditions the 13mm master and best pads on the
stock(ish) brake setup is fine. The Pender set up is stronger and more sensitive but not a big difference.
That is until you really put it to the test out on the dual carriage at speed. It also is nearly fade proof. So I cannot really find fault with an improved stock set up but surely am not displeased with a better one.
The rear stay on the Pender kit fits around the six pot caliper and the stay seems a bit flimsy so far it is fine and
I like the stock look with stays fore and aft.

Thanks for the post. Yes. If you could post a picture or two, that would be helpful. Can I ask more about your impression of the setup? What master cylinder are you using?
Thanks

Yes. I’ve seen the Madass kit. It is definitely on the list of options.

some questions though…
- on the MK 3 setup, is the caliper located in the oem location or in front of the fork tube?
- which disc rotor did you change to?
Thanks

I just went on the Norvil site. I couldn’t find any pictures though. Has anyone used their brake components that could post a couple of pictures or comment with a basic review?
I’ll reach out to Norvil also to see if they have any pictures they can send.

Shayne, Did you look at the links I posted ?

The norvil rotor is junk. The aluminum carrier is to soft and rapidly wear’s out.

Hi Cliffa
Yes. I did go to those links. Thanks. The one for sale site did show the AP caliper in place. Thats good info. I noticed in that application, the lower fender brace was not installed, so I’m guessing it doesn’t fit well with the AP caliper.
The link regarding the Mk3 application is helpful too. I’ve been going through that post also to get some ideas.

Hi,

It's RGM kit 050086 (bought in 2014). When the brake kit was ordered, the M/C was sent off to be resleeved by RGM, so I think it is 13mm, but no detail on file.

I am used to modern bikes, so I find it lacks feeling and requires a strong pull. The rear is surprisingly good. So I nearly always use both together. With the front on it's own, I'm sure I'm wide eyed, as I pray for them to stop in time. I've replaced the fluid. However, the pads are those that came with it in 2014. I have plenty on them, so I gave them a thorough clean. No improvement. But I've got in some EBC replacements, which I'll swap in next service, that might improve things.

Here are some photos of the run of the hydraulic line.

Its a good looking setup. It seems what I’m hearing/learning is it might be to start with the MC. Mine has been fitted with 13mm. Its ok but I’m looking for better. Lots of lever travel.
I’m still in information gathering though!
Thanks for posting the pix

The caliper is on the front of the LH fork tube on a MK III the adapter simply moves the caliper to accommodate the larger diameter. The rotor came from a shop in CT but the owner has passed away. Who supplied him with that rotor I don't know.

My setup looks exactly as Mark UK above except I kept the stock hoses and brackets and simply fabricated the short metal tube that connects to the caliper so that it looks a little more like stock. If the adapter plate was one of those without slots, which are there to accommodate the small and large diameter rotors, it would look more like an OEM brake.

Funny that some, having noticed the disc brake have assured me that the bike NEVER had disc brakes from the factory. When I point out the original Lockheed Norton rear caliper I've been told that's not original! Then mounting the HD their mother wouldn't let them have, they ride off, comfortable with forward controls and ape hanger bars:D

Hi Ying, the previous owner , fitted the , RGM I think , kit ,and andover master , works fantastic, I don't know if that came with the stainless bundy bit , if you need small tight bends like that Sykes pickavent make a nice two piece little bender. Lower fender stay was just modified localy easy enough .Cheers. .
