Was wondering if anyone has some advice on doing a restoration on a 75 Commando MK 3 I am looking at one that is fairly complete but is missing a fair number of engine parts
Any advice would be appreciated
Thx

so what engine parts is it missing?
an engine rebuild can cost from $1500-$4000. depending on what is required, that Assumes you have a good head, crankcase halves, crank and connecting rods, you may as well anticipate buying a new camshaft and all the bits that go with it...
then cosmetics and forks and brakes, wheels, wiring and electrics will also add more cost.
just so you get an idea of the magnitude and effort; the 73 basketcase i rebuilt cost $11,000CDN all in to get it running.

update your profile with a location and you may find some participant on here who is local to you, who would be willing to assist you...

Drummer,
You can start by looking through the Norton Motorcycle Rebuild section to wet your apatite. The wanted section for parts missing. New parts are available. If you are in the Toronto GTA, there is the Super show this weekend and you can talk to us at the Ontario Norton Owners Booth. Friday- Sunday http://www.motorcyclesupershow.ca/
Cheers,
Thomas

you hit the jackpot

As has been asked, WHAT engine parts are missing? This would make a major difference in complexity/cost.

Also, don't know if you've done vehicle restoration projects previously. If so, you know what to expect; if not, frankly, unless you are prepared to spend a lot more money than you think you will need to spend AND you are prepared for it to take much longer than you think it will, it's much more cost effective and efficient to buy a Commando that is currently in good, rideable condition rather that taking on a restoration project. Frankly, I know of more such projects that ended up not being finished at all and resold than ones that actually ended up with a "restored" vehicle. ;)

I don’t think this his first rodeo , pretty sure I sent drummer99 some red grease for his iso rubbers a couple years ago .... the seller in above link has a good seat and new peashooters listed separate from the loosely fitted together ‘75 .....

Well the seller got a nice looking seat and set of pipes .... maybe $6500 for bike and that stuff would be good starting point .... then again maybe it is a fair ask , don’t really know ....

I purchased my mk3 on ebay a few years back for 3k and loads of parts were missing. I rebuilt it and documented every item over a dollar in a database here https://jerrydoe.com/norton-mk3-all-parts/

It cost a lot, but i am very happy how it turned out. Over 10k miles on it since i built it now and hardly any problems. There are some photos of the same bike on that website so you can check it out here: https://jerrydoe.com/norton-commando-mk3-rebuild/

I love this bike!!

Folks thanks for all your input I have done 3 restorations 74,73 and a 69 I am in fact looking at the bike that is currently on Kijji It has been up for a while. I am more interested in feedback comments on the Mk3 as I really don't know too much about them. All of the valve train assembly is missing out of the head replacement cost about $1000.00. Don't really know what would be a good price for this bike
Thx

PS where are the Peashooters and I will see you at the show

The pipes and seat were shown under the sellers other listings two days ago .... good luck !
