Recommendations for a replacement battery for a 961

Actually 4 reasons - I just cannot leave things alone. My wife calls it "Titting around" :rolleyes:
I can think of a few more reasons to move your battery to the new location :
1. Keep the weight down lower on the machine .
2. No more worries about touching off a big arc blast under your alloy gas tank.
3. A good use of open space , I thought about putting a oil tank reservoir there for extra capacity especially for those with the long steep descents that are starving the oil supply.

That would be a really cool mod.
Would make the battery accessible for replacement without wrestling with the tank.

1. Not going to matter with a lithium.
2. this was the worst placement for this motorcycle yet others like BMW have it mounted under the tank/over the engine
3. Tony this is the best idea Ive heard for any 961 mod. oil box with two fittings run the return into one and the other back to the oil tank in frame

CG, can I ask why you think the extra oil tank would be better in the return? I was thinking of putting one on the feed side to ensure that there was no starvation on long descents.
 
More oil is never a bad thing since the oil levels have varied on many of the 961 and also additional cooling
 
Holidays are over, and now back to the battery relocation. I've started to make the platform. It's a piece of 2.5mm ally tread plate, with 2 x 29mm P clips which will go around the tube above the swing arm pivot.

I'm not decided yet on how to fix the back of it to the bike yet, but probably a metal strap going up to the back of the airbox. Sideways movement control of the battery is not necessary, as the frame tubes hold it in place.

I got back to the battery relocation today after a slight change of plan. Instead of a flat plate, the tray is now an "L" shape and has a padded front to it. I made a rear retainer strap out of aluminium (aluminum), and drilled the bottom of the airbox to accept an M6 spider nut. Those airboxes must be really thick, as the nut couldn't reach all the way inside it o_O I used a nut and bolt to spread it, and is seems to be secure enough, but there isn't much load on it anyway. The bottom of the strap just hooks over a stud sticking out of the tray. I made some new starter cables ( see here) and will fit them tomorrow. In the original battery position I will install an isolating switch pointing downwards. I'll post pics of that when it's done.

Nice job using a thumb screw in there.

So your not going to reinstate the hugger I guess.

There is plenty of clearance actually, so it will be going back on after I’ve cleaned up some rust around the mounting holes. I think the hugger holds water underneath causing the rust. I was thinking of ways to stop that. Maybe a rubber or foam gasket?

I placed a rubber washer under (and above) each carbon fibre component at the mounting points - to prevent cracking through vibration. This may also assist with the problem you detail.

All done ( well 95%)....
The old battery location now houses an isolation switch facing down through the rubber screen. The two fuses also face down and can be accessed without removing the tank. Thinking back, embarrassingly I don’t think I’ve ridden or even started the 961 for 6 or 7 months. So, the acid test, isolating switch to “on” (no smoke) ignition on, press the starter button, and she fired up immediately, and settled to an even tickover. Needless to say I’m very pleased with the result. Time will tell whether it was worth it.
