Can somebody identify the year of this hub, and i am also missing one of those long nuts eg part number. Are the rear brake shoes the same for all drum brakes?????? (these need replacing) ........

Thanks

its either early Commando or pre Commando, the difference is the stud thread, Commando used 7/16" NF and the Atlas etc used cycle thread 26TPI, so the thread will tell you something

Obviously. The Commando also has an ugly looking external brake lever return spring at the brake shield which is missing on the Norton-Matchless style brake shield (spring was at the pedal lever pivot).

If you are restoring a Commando, I recommend you swap your parts against the correct ones.

Chris,
Have a close look at the two sleeve nuts you have, The Commando ones (UNF thread) have a light groove /ring machined into their surface. the Dommie ones are plain. Converting a Commando to 520 chain by utilising a Dommie sprocket/drum will need the cycle thread sleeve nuts. If yours has cycle threads, is it a 520 sprocket i.e. 1/4" X 5/8" ?

I have decided to put that hub to one side, cos its "too early" as i have a 72 hub here mostly complete although requires swapping rims around making inner spacer . But thats ok (love puzzles and patterns) It only requires time..............

Thanks for your help..

You will also find that the L.H threaded speedo drive ring/bearing retainer are different threads early and late.

mmmmmh Ok, I can get 4+ full turns on the lock ring and it tends to bind (by hand) tho ive cleaned and inspected several times... mmmmmh Ok got and early and late and will try tommorow...

Thanks Don...

Unless a 2LS front brake hub materialises in the near future (i got Single LS) i might be looking for one of your Disc kits!!
