I put on near rear tire for LOP Texas ride the night before to discover last ~1/2" of treads completely wiped off. It snugged up fine w/o any symptoms or noise, free rolling so just shrugged and took my chances not to break and spoil trip for my buddy. It held up and lately reinstalled just fine repairing a flat after 80 mph attempt to ride in too windy conditions. Ain't had time to check rear hub yet so quizing hive mind if this is a known occurrence with a known reason or a one in a row. I know the bearings are likely dried out but not resisting freewheeling when changing tire on road side nor obvious to me how even a broken up bearing could bugger threads. I put a folded rag-towel under rear tire to hold in line so pretty easy to align axle to slide in by hand then start threads, no beating at all.

Id thought they looked more like a gutter bolt . So ignored it .

Rear axle damage riddle

Material specks and threading would be intresting . Rolled Thread ? . :x

Point taken maddass but did appreciate only having to handle the wheel in cold-dizzle-dark-bleeding. But w/o the end threads helping support I'd guess the stress riser fission reaction is soon to follow. But what could eat off the threads, something road spinning Iassume as no hint of trouble threading snugging of un-doing if was just stub axle threads buggering the axle. Home car and truck crisis and economy have sucked mc funds into a hole for a time but may have to try your one piece after all.

Madass do you have a protocol to ease slipping your solid axle assembly together single handed? Post it in your axle thread not here though.
