Yes but if a belt lets go, there would be more chance of wiping out the pickup.

Not inclined to agree with that, my evidence of other people's belt failures is that the belt runs off of the bottom of the pulley, right into the space your pick up is in!

But....boy scouts carry a spare belt, scoutmasters carry a spare belt, spare pick up and mount and change the belt early....shouldn't be a problem really!

I carry a belt and pickup now.
