Pulled over by police and bike hauled off to impound.

I suspect that the problem partly derives from the fact that our serial numbers pre-date the federalized Vehicle Identification Number system. The VIN system include letters that are coded for make and model and date of manufacture and other information beyond the serial number, it’s likely that someone at DMV has to open a new screen that is rarely needed and make a custom data entry and there the problem arises.
 
based on some of the shenanigans dealt out by these offices, no wonder why government run offices become targets of frustrated lone gunmen ex employees etc ....

whats it gonna take to smarten some of these sucka's?

Have you ever asked yourself "why they hell does the US post office have so many disgruntled employees shooting up their workplace?" You would think that the Department of motor vehicles would be 10 times more crazy than the post office workers... hence the term "Going postal" meaning gun violence in the work place...
 
I have to be honest here - my local motor vehicle office is very pleasant and seemingly efficient. One employee is SEVERELY handicapped and has every reason to be mad at the world but he is as congenial and helpful as a person can be - perhaps his example and positive attitude is pervasive.
 
Never had any problems like this up here in frozen Canada. We are the Dominion of Canada so we have close ties to the Queen and the British system of registrations so older numbers come up fine . I try to be in a small town rather than the big city for Service Ontario vehicle stuff. Always politer and helpful.

I think it’s a very bad idea when the person getting the lesser number of votes wins the election. This has happened twice in 16 years.

The presidential election is the only election not decided by the popular vote. Senate and gubernatorial elections are not decided by county electors and, in most cases, it is the vote from the precincts of the large cities, not the rural areas, that determine the outcome.

Wow I thought Canada was friendly. We get a lot of hate from other states, but this is the first from our friends up north.

I have been to several DMV locations across NJ and NYC, most often at what might be the busiest DMV in the country midtown Manhattan (whenever I register a new bike, lose my reg etc...) and I've gotta say if you make an appointment and show up with the CORRECT paper work you can be in and out in under 20 minutes. I only buy bikes I know won't be a PITA at the DMV, no title? Better be 1972 or older.

I showed up early for a 4:30 appointment once and was done by 4:35.

It is usually the customers at the DMV, not the employees that have me shaking my head. Couldn't imagine spending 8 hours a day interacting with mopes like me.

and again it was done that way to keep the large states from having the say in a presidential election and the lesser populated states being run over by these states. if it was by popular vote you just as well should stay home as the outcome would be predetermined buy just 3 or 4 states.if you had civics you should know another mistake IMHO was when the senators election was changed from voted by the state to a popular vote by the citizens of that state. the state lost representation for its interests and needs.that move also moved us closer to a democracy and farther from a representative republic. again a bad move IMHO

Here in the UK, photo driving licences are relatively new - some people still have a paper licence if they have not moved house for decades. When they were first introduced a significant number of motorcyclists had their entitlement to ride removed from their licence, with no proof of entitlement as DVLA kept or destroyed previous paper licence, (DVLA = DMV) many were forced to retake their motorcycle test and many did not bother. Conspiracy theorist would say a deliberate act by govt to remove motorcyclists from the road in order to reduce traffic casualty figures....
Still happens occasionally but motorcycle action groups have got the message out - take a copy of your licence before you send it for changes
The other change (revenue generator) is that the photo on the licence has to be updated every 10 years at significant cost despite the fact that licences are valid from date of passing test until age 75. A lot of drivers and motorcyclist are getting caught out and fined - “sorry sir your licence is out of date”
 
Two very different threads here. 1) MA registry seems to keep good records so the OP issue has never come up for me. I register in VT if the bike is missing a title or if there are sales tax issues.

As far as electoral issues, I feel as if we would be a world of pain if the three or four most populous states controlled presidential elections. They can’t seem to handle even the basic safety of their urban citizens. I’m continuously impressed at how the founding fathers understood the natural weaknesses of political structures and power and how they drafted against them.

Not intended as hate, just wishin there was a way to help. we see our own version of frustration, but this thread isn't a place to go with it.

So four or five very large cities could lord it over the whole rest of the United States? And if the Democrats had won by virtue of the self same electoral college what would your take be then? All this was hashed out by the founding fathers. It was in order that people in very rural, but so necessary, areas would have their concerns addressed too. It began with the debates contained in both the Federalist papers and the Anti-Federalist papers, two books giving many sides to the greatest debates by the most brilliant minds that ever formed a government. One result was that in 1804 the election was not just by popular clamor, but would be modulated by a group of electors. Thus we don't have a pure democracy, but a system to knit a whole country together despite its vast size. Compare the results of the French revolution to our own. In the end their revolution was not so well thought out and became mob rule with no modulation. When it was over the French themselves called it "The Terror", rivaled only by East Germany and the nightmare under Stalin. It is an odd fact that the "constitution" of the Soviet Union is a copy of our own, but the leaders never paid the least attention to all the pesky little details -- like the electoral college for instance. How we avoided ending like those failed attempts is due to a government designed by the men who gave us this archaic electoral college as well. They understood far better than we do today not only how to build a nation, but how to keep it.

Ironically, before retiring, I was a manager for a local government agency. One of my units was a building permit counter serving the public. Working a window position at a public counter can be a real grind; having this knowledge, I go out of my way to be pleasant to persons staffing counters at businesses, the post office and even the DMV.

Yes. Any system that lets losers win just to throw that side an occasional bone is silly. Or for children.

If you've lost the physical title, you're screwed. I had to get my congressman to intercede and force the DMV to replace my lost title. The banks in the UK sold PPI protection for their bank loans e.t.c. and somehow wiped out all their bank details held on computer after 6 years, so, have no information on who they sold a PPI to. Anyone who took out a bank loan, whether they paid for PPI or not could claim PPI money back- to date over £6 million paid out by the banks - a lot more than they took in fees in the first place. A clear case of shooting oneself in the foot!!!!!

I hate to state the obvious, but every runner-up in history has wished for a system that would put them ahead of the person who beat them. The Electoral College is the only place where 2nd place isn't necessarily like kissing your sister. The ironic part is, the people whose candidates have taken advantage are the ones most against picking winners and handing out freebies. Can you say hypocrisy?
 
Never had a problem at Illinois Secretary of State (dmv) driver and vehicle licensing facilities.

A friend walked in once with an unsigned bike title (he had a signed bill of sale) and the person at the counter said, "It's a good thing the former owner is right outside and you can get a signature."
When my friend looked confused, the clerk repeated the sentence VEEERRRRRRYY slowly, with emphasis. No brass-ass rulebook pounders there.
