canadian bikes were supposed to have steel liners in the engine instead of the Nikisil plated bores. according to Matt Capri. so who really knows unless you place a borescope down the plug hole and take peek...

SE came w spoked wheels , BST’s were about the only option available with the bike. for US spec bikes.....

I am 100% confident that ALL the CDN SE's have every available option including nikisil liners.

i would check it, there were bikes built w steel liners. that is how the oiling problems surfaced, wrong rings in the wrong engines. so unless you have had it scoped, you really don’t know.

Good Morning 961 by Richard-7, on Flickr

I just took delivery of my SE from South Bay Triumph. I ordered and put a deposit on it in February 2011 - took delivery May 2015. There is no SE number on the bike or in the factory documents - just the decal showing it is a Commando 961 SE on the airbox, and the original factory MSO and Norton's shipping documents showing the model as an SE.
So........is it a "real" SE, or is there a Norton or a dealer scam going on? I've always been told in my many follow up calls and visits with South Bay that there were only 50 SE's coming to the US and mine was one of them. The fact that there is no numbered bike ID plate on the bike was told to me by the owner of South Bay just prior to me picking it up, with no good explanation. I hope to get this resolved. The bike runs fine but is mechanically noisy - supposed to quite down with break-in miles, I'm told! I live in Utah.

On all the SE's i've seen, the last 3 numbers of the serial number are reserved and match the SE#. My serial number ends in 112 and my bike is SE#112 as an example. SO that's probably the way to tell.

If that is the case that the last three numbers in the VIN number are the SE number, then my SE is #170. It has spoke wheels, the radial Brembo brake, and the inverted forks.

Well there could be other numbers too but def the last 3 match the SE #.

Any chance anyone could post a pic of their SE Number Plate, to see what one is supposed to look like?

Thanks, for posting the insight on the VIN# / Production# relationship.

Took delivery of a SE from South Bay 12/14 with no # on the cluster; just two tags that say the same thing ( seriously I had to cover them with tape) but the Vin is 111; Wire wheels, RWU forks.

The story I heard was ( and this is of course all a story) that someone in England issued duplicate number(s) {I'm thinking when they started the US # of 50 program} so they stopped and are trying to figure out what to do........... Bloody Limies  (maybe one too many pints of Smitties at lunch)

Minor detail but fun to post about!

Mine is 'USA 12 of 50', I don't know where that number fits in with the 1-200 scheme.
It is black with alloy rims / spoke wheels.

Hi Terry - if you're still reading this, I bought your USA 12 of 50 at CalMoto in Livermore yesterday. Anything I should know? I saw that you posted elsewhere about oil consumption. I've got some cardboard under the bike now, but wondering if you ever heard anything?

Cheers,
Ken S.

I'm still confused why SE's were being delivered in 2014. Wasn't that the original 961 model starting around 2010 before they made a few changes?
When I ordered in early 2014 they offered only the SF, Cafe Racer, or Sport.
This is what I know: I have a US SE that was delivered to me in May 2015 - Norton's factory MSO, which I received the original copy of to title it in my state, identified it as a 2015 Commando 961 SE. There is no SE number plate, just two of the Donington plates as noted elsewhere in this string. I ordered this bike from South Bay Norton in Feb 2011 with a $3000 deposit & I was number 50 on the list of 50 with deposits on the US allotment of SE's. My inquiries into the lack of the SE number plate produced the following information.

Because of the long delay in getting the USA EPA certification completed the 50 US SE's we're not produced until after the other 150 world-wide were already delivered. US law does not allow bikes to be manufactured for US import until after the EPA certification date, so the factory had to not create VIN numbers for US bikes that we're not in compliance with this law. Because of some screw-ups by the factory in issuing some specific customer-requested SE numbers, the intended SE numbering scheme got messed up, and they stopped putting SE tags or numbers on most or all of the US delivered SE's. According to SBN owner Matt Capri, he plans to get SE number tags issued for the 50 US bikes, which he sold all of, once they are all delivered and he works out the numbering with the factory. He personally made this statement to me after we had a long conversation on his cell phone concerning this issue, which I was not happy about. I believe they will be numbered USA x of 50 or something similar. There will only be a world-wide total of 200 SE's built. Again, this is from Matt Capri, who was the first US dealer for Norton and is the only US dealer who could sell SE's. We'll see if this all comes about.
