Ordering from Andover Norton (2020)

Hi Dave

normally have really fast delivery. I got a notice that a clutch lever shipped on April 9. Still waiting for it two weeks later.
My last AN order took longer but that's because the NY customs was shut down. It got routed to Cleveland where the US Customs took forever and then screwed up and charged duties. Once I got that straightened out, it was a Friday afternoon and so it got to me until Monday. So, yes, slower, AN's fault, no.

BTW, there is no duty to be paid on Motorcycle parts to the US from the UK. If charged, and DHL is the shipper, call the DHL customs customer support and explain that the code should be 8714.00.0050 and the duty will be removed in an hour or two.

LAB,
Tell an old, slightly overworked fogy what to correct and I'll consider it. Problem is when I work on a webpage at 11pm after a full day at work I tend to overlook things. Unforgiveable for sure but it happens.
You'd be surprised how many mistakes I already found and corrected in the old parts lists when I put them on the net. No doubt there is more.
Joe

Ok here are few incorrect or at least questionable items in my opinion, some are parts book errors, some are not. Some are reasonably trivial:

Edit: Items struck-through have been corrected.

https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/sho...ock-rear-chain-oiler-and-full-flow-oil-filter

The feed line is marked [2x17] "OIL PIPE 12 INCH FEED" which are the two RETURN pipes.
The RETURN line (two items) is marked [16] "OIL PIPE 17.1/2 INCH FEED".

https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/sho...oil-pipes-junction-block-and-rear-chain-oiler

The 1972 parts book diagram with the oil filter assembly incorrectly drawn on the feed line and could be replaced with the '73 drawing.

https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/489/oil-tank-battery-tray-air-filter-1969-70-r-s-

The page is titled: Oil Tank, Battery Tray, Air filter 1969/70 "R" & "S"

...Which should be 'S' and '70 Roadster, not 'R' as the 'R' didn't have the central oil tank.

Therefore various parts not 'R'.
06.1157 OIL TANK BANJO (RETURN) S TYPE & 1970 R
06.1233 BATTERY TRAY/OIL TANK SUPPORT PAD, "S" and 1970 "R"
06.1223 BATTERY TRAY SIDE RUBBER, "S" & 1970 "R"

Same again, should be 'S' and '70 Roadster

850 Mk3 Front wheel:
https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/143/front-wheel-and-brake

[16] "WHEEL SPACER ASSY (DISC WHEEL) RH"

The LH spacer is marked:

[19] "SPACER ASSEMBLY R/H"

Drawing marked correctly but "Disc Side" and "Non-Disc Side" spacers are listed incorrectly.

[27] WASHER - REAR WHEEL SPINDLE (92.2033)
"quantity required: 2"

92.2033 is the dummy axle washer.
The rear spindle is 17mm (or Imp. equivalent) so two different size washers?
Edit: Although "quantity required: 2" has been deleted, if 92.2033 is, in fact, the spindle washer then the dummy axle washer is missing from the list as the Mk3 spindle and dummy axle washers are different sizes.

Mk3 exhaust
Item 31 is the collet and 32 is the spherical seating.

Mk1A and Mk2A
Items 4 & 5.

SILENCER BRACKET RH and LH marked (850 MK3 INTERPOL) and wrong LH/RH Interpol plates shown. The correct 'A' exhaust plates are 06.4150 (2).
https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details/16275

Edit: The low-level 064649/064650 "850 Mk3 Interpol" plates are also for Mk1A/2A models and not just Mk3 Interpol but "To be used as a set when panniers fitted" (Mk1A supplement. Error in Mk2/2A supplement)

Why use that drawing when there is a better drawing in the Mk1A supplement without the odd side cover parts and incorrectly drawn exhaust plates?

Mk1A and Mk2A
Wrong LH side cover 06.6307 Dzus receptacle as it's 06.4066 according to the Mk1A/2/2A parts lists.

I would question whether 06.5954 is compatible with "04.0284 LAYSHAFT 4TH GEAR 18T" as both were changed at the same time but 04.0284 is still available?

04.0079 O RING - RATCHET SPINDLE
Deleted-Not required according to the Mk3 parts book addendum (and wouldn't be the correct size).

Mk3 detent washer and O-ring missing from the drawing.

The Mk3 switch cluster screws are itemised as:

[2x 19], [1x 19B], [1x 19C] yet there are 7 screws, 4 LH and 3 RH.

[8x 21] 3/16" spring washers 06.8107 for 11 screws which are 2 (or 3) different sizes.

The various significant mid-production changes such as the Mk2/Mk2A rear wheel assembly, brake plate, slotted chainguard and sealed swingarm pivot assembly etc. aren't listed as alternative parts although some are available from AN (not the rear wheel parts) which I think would be useful if they were included.

Edit: When you get a spare 5 minutes that is. No hurry. :)

@ZFD I wanted to add my real world impacts of L.A.B.'s note.

But first, I want to say what a fantastic site you have, and that I find it serves not only as a great way to order, but it is also an invaluable reference for helping people troubleshoot.

When I was restoring my 74 mk2, I was largely compiling a handwritten list of replacement parts needed as I was disassembling sections of the bike.

One of these was the chain guard, and for a lot of this stiff I was pulling numbers either out of the parts book or off the AN site, since it was so easy to do in conjunction with ordering online. Of course, your site says "1974 INCL. JPN & MK2A"

Unfortunately, I have a late model mk2 that has the Welch plugs, short bushings, slotted chain guard, etc.

So, I ended up buying quite a few parts that I put on the shelf for when reassembly time came, then opened up and lo and behold, did not fit.

Looked at the old parts, mmm, different. Looked at my parts book in the back of the workshop manual, right numbers. Google and buy the 2a supplement. Compare, and oops, my own damned fault.

But, it was my first full rebuild. It would have been great to see both options for the 2/2a parts on the page labeled "1974 INCL. JPN & MK2A". It would have caused me to look a bit closer when ordering those parts where two options were present.

Yes. Fortunately I knew the latter Mk 2 had these changes. But I couldn't find the latter type slotted / recessed chainguard on the Andover site.

However I was able to get it from RGM.

That is the problem as the slotted chainguard is there at AN and has been for some time but without knowing the part number then it's not all that easy to find.

Yes. You are absolutely correct. I didn't find it when I looked. Cost AN a sale.

Further to your comment about Mk2 and Mk2a being contemporaneous models I have the AN dating notes for my bike.

It was built on 26 August 1974 and dispatched 27 August 1974. Built and described as a Mk2.

The photocopied record also lists a Mk2a built the very same day. Plus Interpol models built the same day.

So Mk2, Mk2a and Interpol models were all being built on the same day. In August 1974 at least.

Yes, and rather than buy a second new chainguard, I had to shave the one rubber inspection plug to fit underneath. The 2a brake plate and plugs are on the AN page for the rear hub.

The 2a brake plate and plugs are on the AN page for the rear hub.

Yes, but Mk2 and 2A as those parts are not specifically listed for Mk2A in the supplement.

It would seem that the 06.5826 brake plate was introduced early enough to be included in the Mk2/2A supplement so maybe the brake plate was not a mid-season change?

https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/178/rear-wheel-drum-bearings
[13] "Rear brake plate 06.5826"
[13A] "Blanking grommet Mk2a 06.5766"
[13A (Mk2A)] "Rear brake plate 06.5826" (again)
[x2 13B (Mk2A)] "Blanking grommet 850 Mk2a rear brake plate, quantity 2, 06.5766" (again).

Unless there are early Mk2s or 2As out there that have the previous 06.0332 brake plate without inspection holes/grommets then it only needs to be:

[13] "Rear brake plate 06.5826"
[13A] "Blanking grommet 06.5766, quantity 2"

My bike is 4/74.

The point was more that a mk2 with the brake plate with the grommets needs the slotted chain guard, yet while the former appears on the AN 74 2/2a page, the latter does not.

You only have to spend an afternoon working on a brit bike that has limited spares support and documentation to realize just how wonderful the AN site is. Not only can you see the drawing and get a real photo but you can actually BUY these bits!

Likewise most popular motor cars of the same era :-(

Oh Dear!
Sounds as if my evenings and weekends are spoken for yet again!

Don't be disheartened Joe, your site , staff & components are first class in my opinion.
All the above points are constructive & are certainly not criticism , they will also make a first class service WORLD CLASS...
P.S... any chance of getting that coffee machine installed:)

Thank you

Joe has his own team of parts experts so I'm sure that won't be necessary.

Considering how many thousands of parts AN sells then the number of apparent errors is relatively low.

We all know that you are one of the MkIII experts in the world. And if you don't know an answer you'l find out.

L.A.B. the Mk2A that I have was manufactured 9/73 s/n 3084xx and does not have the brake plate bung etc nor does it have the welch plugs in the swing arm, I don't believe my bike has been changed so your suspicion of mid model up grades is probably correct.

I don't know how any parts book or vendor would be able to manage mid-model changes. That's a tough one. If you have a part and need a replacement I think by now you should be aware you need to be explicit with a description of what you have and know that it may not match what one would assume it has.
