One owner 810 Dunstall interview - Tales from the Cul de Sac

Knut

I have first hand experience with a 5 speed 810 Dunstall. The gearbox was really nice until I managed to break teeth off every gear in the box, in fact some of the gears were completely stripped of teeth. However the bike was being abused at the time on a fairly tame motocross track. Hardly the place for an 810 Dunstall that was an identical build to the subject one (rearsets clip-ons etc).

The prior weekend I had made numerous runs at Castlereagh drag strip which had involved some clutch dropping at high revs. Some may remember Castlereagh drags and the public being able to make runs for a nominal fee.

So after that I picked up a second hand box from an 850 (purchased from Ryan’s of Parramatta for those that remember Ryan’s) and that has been in the bike ever since.

Phil's bike has a 5 speed Quaife gearbox. I wonder how well the Quife cluster holds up in an 810 Dunstall, or an 850. Is there someone with first hand experience?

Let me put it this way Quaife are still trading......

Try Quaife Engineering, Monk Rd, Alfreton, Derbyshire.
I have no connection with this company.

So, you have to go to a Quaife appointed dealer, it's not unusual.....
I really do not know why this is proving so difficult, or why you feel the need to add sarcastic undertones to every reply?

Mick Henmings was the authorised Quaife distributor.

Quaife did not / would not sell directly.

Mick has passed away.

Hence my question: do you know who now sells them retail since Micks passing?

It’s a simple question.

If you don’t know, just say so.

You just said Mick has passed away, I in turn thought you meant someone called Mick at Quaife Ltd, you didn't say Mick Hemming until your last message!!!

Are you serious ?!?

The full context was: “Where does one buy a Quaife box for a Norton since Mick’s passing ?”

Anyway, I guess the answer is you don’t know.

End of.

Angie Hemmings would probably be a good person to ask if anyone has taken up the manufacture of boxes? I'm guessing no.

Now look who is talking it into a different context, and misunderstanding the context??

No I’m not.

I’m genuinely surprised that’s all.

You put yourself out there as a knowledgeable Norton racing chap, yet did not put Mick’s passing and Quaife supply questions together.

My mistake was that I thought you knew what you were talking about and had something to add.

Your mistake was adding unnecessary and unhelpful sarcastic one liners to your replies.

And between us we ended up here.

Time to move on doncha think?

My question was where to buy… not who makes them…
If you go to Quaife Motorcycle Gearkits at their home page, there is a link for direct ordering (with Quaife, I suppose). Ufortunately, the link is defunct, this may be a temporary fault. I'd contact Quaife and ask them to fix the link(s).
In their web shop, there are 5- and 6-speed kits on offer, unfortunately both are out of stock at the moment. I'd call sales with Quaife to register your order.

Cheers,
Knut

What's that supposed to mean? The particular gear set may still be a shitty product.

Ando: Thanks for confirming the Quaife cluster was not up to task of handling the torque produced by the Norton/Dunstall 810 some decades back in time. The gear material used today may be of improved quality though.
I remember reading about gear expert John Favill assisting the Commando development team in 1967/68 to make the existing AMC gear cluster able to handle the Commando's increased torque, so it's probably fair to say the AMC gear design was exhausted as it needed tweaking,
after which it probably was pretty much exhausted again! Now, making the gears thinner in order to squeeze in a 5 speed cluster does not seem like a recipe for success, at least when using straight-cut gears.

I guess there is a reason why TTi makes "HD" quality transmissions. Still, I'd be interested to learn what Quaife Engineering may offer today in terms of torque capacity.
