Hello,

Sorry to bug you all, but I have a question for real Norton aficionados. This looks to be the place to get some good opinions about this.

My Dad's garage houses his 1970 Norton Commando and he wants me to sell it and I have no idea what it's worth. That's all the info I have about it and that it's been in the garage for 15+ years. I have someone asking me how much I want for it and I don't want to be unfair, nor do I want to get ripped off. Please have a look at the photo and let me know what you think.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Much appreciated.
Jeremy

Old Norton in the garge, what's it worth?

If it was me, I'd put it on Ebay with a reserve of maybe 1500 and a buy it now of 3000.

Well, actually, if it was me, I wouldn't sell it at all; I'd restore it. Wells Fargo can help you with a loan to do so. :)

It does look like it needs a complete resto. If the engine is not frozen it would be worth an extra $500 to me. I'd think a max of $1500 but it could depend on area of the country.

I paid $1000 for mine in about the same shape (not even two weeks ago!). The motor kicks over, clutch and brakes work too. I think I got a good deal though.

Looks to me like a possible '69 'S' model in Fireflake Blue, but the exhaust and the handlebars have been changed. Everything else matches up. Is the 1/2" nut that is almost directly above the clutch adjusting plug on the primary case (the rear isolastic nut) beat up on one side. If so, that is an indication that it was originally an 'S' model because the 'S' exhausts ran up the top of the primary and when things loosened up, the exhaust would beat against that nut. Ask me how I know!!

I have no idea what it is worth, it is worth what someone wants to pay for it, but I would not let it go, if I had it, for less than $1500. Personal opinion. It looks like it could run again with lots of work. Mine was in somewhat worse shape than this one and I probably have about $6-7K in it now with a total rebuild.

Does the motor turn over? Does your dad still have the title?

It might bring $1500 - $2000 on ebay.

I'd hire a local kid to polish it up a bit... some fine steel wool and "bar keepers friend", pay 'em 50 bucks when he's finished, and then put it on ebay for $2000. best of luck with it. cheers, Don

That's a real groovy paint job. Does your Dad have any picture of himself from back then with his flock o seagulls haircut. You might want to look in the tool carrier for a baggy.

On the serious side, that bike will clean up. A few hours will bring an extra grand.

Title is a major factor, no title, maybe $1,000. I passed on a MKIII in similar condition last week without a title for $1,500. With a title and not cleaned up, a local that knows what they're looking at should give you $2,000 if you hold out for it.

Advertise it as an "S" model, the panels are correct and the headlight halo is still there. Clean it up a bit and some sucker will give you $2,500 on eBay.

"Clean it up a bit and some sucker will give you $2,500 on eBay."

Heck, if it is all original and not frozen up and I was looking for another Norton, I'D give you 2500 for it! :)

Where do you live? I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Ha! Just like potato chips, Chuck? Can't have just one! (or two...)

Jeremy, Can't tell where you're located but I can just about promise you that there's a Norton Club of some kind not far from you. Believe it or not, a knowledgeable enthusiast is more likely to give a decent price than some wanker. Google INOA and see if anything's nearby. Or just tell us where you're at because chances are somebody here is near you or knows someone who is.
There was a time when people used lace to get a nice overlay custom paintjob. It would probably rub off easily. Is that the original Blue Metalflake under there?

Throw in the signed Dennis Hopper poster and you will get a better price for it!

Now Debby, I know you would like to start another restoration right? I really don't have the room but for a fair price I think I could some how figure something out. I know now my illness is terminal and seeing an old Commando in need of a little love just pulls on my heart strings, But it does help knowing that there are a lot of people like me out there that feel the same. And someone will bring her back to life, And that's whats important I guess. I just don't want to see it parted out that's all. Ride safe, Chuck. P.S. What we need to do is make sure he sees the Wells Fargo commercial, Maybe he will contract the same illness I have, LOL.

Oh and for the record Debby has two incredible Norton's as you can see, You should see them in person.
