Good day Gents Dennis here, Yesterday I received my new Tusk bearing removal kit and went to work straight away with removing the wheel bearings on my 73 850 Cmdo. I had my trusty shop manual near by and all went super well, especially when you take the time to fully understand the technique of using the axles to remove the rear pair. I haven't tackled the drum as yet but I am not concerned. In the mean time I was looking over the replacement parts and was wondering if the Old Britts front sealed double row bearing and replacement center spacer was a simple plug and play sort of speak. Anyone out there wish to comment on their experience with this set up? I do understand that the drum double row does require the hub to be milled.
Many thanks, Dennis

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

Sealed double-row bearings of the correct (16mm) width size can now be obtained from various Norton parts suppliers.

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

Walridge has been selling them for years.

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

What is the part number on the correct 16 mm wide double row?
With that should be able to get them at a Bearing house.
Thanks

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

Good day, I ordered the 4203 RS (correction not RC) double row sealed bearing size 17 40 16 . Received the two today from Walridge, one has a blue seal and one is black, any difference in application respecting the seal color?

Is this the same spec as needed for both bearings in a disc hub as well for a 74 mk2?

Yes, it's the same for all Commando front hubs, disc or drum, including Mk2/Mk2A.

The seals of the two bearings are of different colors because they originate from different manufacturers. Likely the bearings with the blue seals come from All Balls. The black ones could be almost anyone's ... but the name should be either on the races, and/or the seals.

Gregg, Thanks for your response. The two bearings came in generic little bags and only 4203 RS (correction not RC) is printed on both bearings, no manufacturer indicated. I was pleased to see that they are truly 16mm as per the non sealed original double row type. Cheers, Dennis

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

BTW, I was stuck for the 16mm double row sealed bearing at Walridge for a whoping $54, but I was able to find at a bearing retailer the replacement single row 12mm sealed 6203 2RSH SKF‏ at $8.50 instead of Walridge at $21.95. That's ridiculous 3 for the price of 1 of theirs. :?

When it comes to bearings and seals, a bearing supply house is usually much cheaper than buying from a parts dealer. In some cases you have a choice of quality from the supply house, as well.

Personally I would never use any bearing without manufacturer indication. You definitely want to be sure of a good quality bearing for that application :!:

Well this is the one they sell and I do feel uncomfortable with the absence of the manufacturer however no one has made negative comments regarding this bearing from Walridge. I searched high and low and can't seem to source out another seller of the double row sealed at 16mm. I was pleased to find a sealed SKF for the 12mm single.

Re: Old Britts front double row sealed bearing & adapted spa

As I don't want to rely on 'no negative comments so far' I fitted SKF 17,5mm wide double sealed bearings. This is realy no big deal, all you need to do is turn down the centre spacer 1,5mm for the front wheel. The rear wheel needs little more machining: 1,5mm off the brake drum dummy axle and 1,5mm deeper bearing seating of the brake drum/chainwheel. Easy job IF you got a lathe

I did this also. If I ever want to go to 16mm bearing, that oem spacer is rather inexpensive @ $10.00.
