Oil leak from gearbox.

Thanks Ron...have done a scan of the RGM and Norvil catologs today, and there seems to be such a "seal" or "X" ring available through them.....so maybe that would cure the cancer for me....will give one of them a ring and ask if the item is what I think it is and if it will fit my tranny......but thanks once again for the info!!! It may yet, come in handy.... :D

This kickstart seal modification (as far as I know) involves machining the outer gearbox case to take the K/S shaft seal from the 850 MkIII.

Hewho..
The seal available from RGM and most Norton dealers is the one found on MkIII outer covers. This will work but requires machining of the outer cover to fit.

That means I need to use either the seal mentioned above in the thread....or an "X"ring....right?

Sounds indeed like a job for "Superman"....

God...what a hassel, over a little piece of rubber.....

Oh my!.......Deja vu... seems like I said that phrase, at some earlier time in my life...huummm.......but I can't remember which wife .... or which kid...

Hewho...
The offer still stands. If you want to PM me your address, I'll ship you a seal from my spare stash.

hewho........

Found the lip seal that should fit here in europe from SKF you probably know this campany. The No. of the seal is CR 9815.
I just got a seal from them but have not fitted it yet.

Thanks...noted the info. SKF is naturally available here. Have a lip seal in the bike now, and it has been in for a number of months , as one our nice forum mates was so kind as to send me one and I fitted it. Come to think of it...been in the tranny now for awhile, and it hasn't leaked since. Forgot about it as it didn't leak...and you have now reminded me that it seems to have been just the trick for the nasty old dripping onto the exhaust pipe.. :D

The member that sent it to me knows who he is...thanks once again...it took care of the problem. Put it in with a bit of silicon sealer, as it was just a tad too small for the hole, but that would make it easier to remove and replace at some time in the future. Kind of tricky dealing with the steel bushing that you have to remove to get the seal in...but it worked.....Thanks!

Yesterday I replaced both the kickstart O-ring (by a X-type) and the gear selector O-ring. After a short test ride, the oil leakage, sorry, this oil leakage seems to be stopped.
There's another one though: at the spindle bolts. (# 040136). In order to renew the O-rings (#040129), can those bolts be unscrewed without any other dismantling ?

A rubber O-ring that can wear a groove in a steel engine cradle?

Mick Hemmings, from his gearbox rebuild video, and I quote: "It's amazing how a rubber seal can wear a groove in hardened steel."

I think he was talking about another seal/steel combo, but apparently it happens. If anybody wants to know which, let me know and I'll review the video - which is always a pleasure!

Yes.

From the colour of the oil it looks like it's from the gearbox, and not from the engine. repairs on the bike, so I'm a bit afraid. Removal of the gearbox, is it a difficult job?

Jorgen

if it's gearbox lube, you'll smell the difference ..it's very pungent. (if if fact the PO used gearbox lube)
