If fitted to the feed side of the pump, it could negatively affect flow, or pressure, or both.
So the return is best.
Some people get hung up on the fact you‘re filtering oil on the way out, rather than in, to the engine. But, unless you add contamination into your oil tank, it does not matter where the filter is located in the circuit. In fact, if contaminants are created in the engine, then catching them ASAP is best as it keeps the rest of the system clean.

Not sure if I'd follow Mr Emery's advice re: 'Tighten new filter with a strap wrench', but each to their own, of course....
As the jubilee clip provides: 'Belt and braces' too..

Oil pump is a gear pump also known as a positive displacement pump. It pushes oil much better than sucking oil so any filter needs to be on the push side of the pump. Hence without major replumbing needed on the feedside it best fitted to the return side where the pipe is in the push side of the return pump.

Just don't use the infamous diagram from the workshop manual that shows the direction of oil flow incorrectly.

depends WHICH manual!
Both factory Mk3 manuals I have, show the flow direction correct. What year manual is incorrect?

Wasn't it a "past" parts manual circulation diagram that was incorrect and.....
Not the workshop manual....certainly not mind anyway

Yes, the 1972 parts manual has the filter drawn on the feed line...
...therefore, should be...
...also resulted in the feed and return hoses being listed incorrectly and the return line should not be drawn passing through the guide clip, '23' and this diagram error wasn't corrected in later parts manuals including 850 Mk3.

If you are using a sump plug reed valve system a lot of oil will by pass the filter, nearly all when clearing a wet sump. Keep the screen, may not be a conciseness just my opinion.
